Abstract: In Brazil, miscegenation not only became a symbol of “being Brazilian”, but also served as justification for the thesis that the people were either inferior or superior to those of other nations. The racial mixture that was widely spread here, initially by the interaction between the white (Portuguese), with the indigenous peoples, and, later, with the black, was understood both as degeneration, according to precepts whose archeology we tried to unveil, and as exaltation, based on proposals that counterpointed eugenics. According to this eugenics, the races mixed and, consequently, lost their initial purity and even their essence. Moreover, such a mixture would be related to sexual practices that were widespread on this Earth. The indigenous nudity, the scarcity of white women for the Portuguese, the alleged lewdness of the black race, the enslaved condition of black women were all blamed. The result, according to certain theses, was the formation of a lazy, sickly people with an uncertain future, as affirmed by Brazilian scientists, including, of course, a large part of the eugenicists. For many years, these intellectuals argue that the way to reverse the problems that miscegenation caused was through good miscegenation, that is, in the whitening of the population through racial interbreeding controlled by an eugenic policy that was mixed with a hygienic policy. In 1933, Gilberto Freyre’s The Masters and the Slaves innovated the intellectual landscape, inserting the black as a crucial element in the racial and cultural formation of an unique people: the Brazilian. In place of pessimism, racial democracy was born, which, despite denying the inferiority of the black and of Brazilians, fosters the belief that there is no racism in Brazil due to racial mixture: if we are all mixed, how could there be racism? However, the stereotype of the sensual black woman is reinforced in Freyre’s ideas, as if these women were responsible for the racial mixture. This discussion was present in much of the Brazilian artistic and intellectual production. The implicit character of this discursive dispute can be noticed even in indications such as the fact that Paulo Prado wrote the preface of the Manifesto of Pau-Brasil Poetry. Miscegenation overflowed into art, which welcomed it and elevated it to the condition of a great asset, a national treasure, a treasure that refuses to shed social capital.

Abstract: This dissertation aims to understand the discursive stage that moved between imagistic semiotics, description and narration, which interacted in a trade that exploited models and references that were necessarily known and guaranteed the minimum intelligibility of something so different. The authors who make up the characters in this dissertation were chosen because they are a good sample or good representatives of the various 16th century political projects for the Americas. Four authors from different decades of the same century, with divergent ideals, defending different projects for the New World. Pero de Magalhães Gândavo, Jean de Léry, André Thevet and Walter Raleigh are the main characters in the narrative of this dissertation. They project the monsters of their imaginations and their imaginations onto the New World, preferably - but not exclusively - based on the elements bequeathed by the literature of Greek, Latin and Greco-Latin Classical Antiquity. But these prodigious beings were not only evoked to think negatively or positively about the world that was unfolding - to use a recurring image from the 17th to the 19th century - but also, at the same time, to exalt and demean their adversaries. The idea of exalting by demeaning, demeaning by exalting, is as old as the Iliad itself. Like Heracles, Perseus, Theseus or Odysseus, the monster fighter becomes as much of a hero as the monster.

Abstract: This thesis is a micro-ethnographic analysis of the performance of a LIBRAS (Brazilian Sign Language) interpreter in a classroom attended by both deaf and hearing students, while interpreting in consecutive and simultaneous formats. Its main objective is to identify the kinds of role an interpreter may perform in this new educational context, where LIBRAS interpreters have been recently expected to operate, as ruled by the Brazilian Ministry of Education Policy of Inclusive Education. The analysis was carried out in light of the following constructs: 1) Goffman's (1981) theory of interactional roles; 2) Wadensjö's (1998) reception format model and her taxonomy of utterances generated in interpreter-mediated communication; and 3) Tannen and Wallat's (1987/1998) concepts of frames and schema. It concludes that the interpreter under study performs several roles when working in a classroom with both deaf and hearing students, including the unexpected role of a teacher. This can be attested by observing interpreter utterances and those of the other participants of this classroom event. As a result, the study highlights aspects that deserve further investigation about the responsibilities of LIBRAS interpreters in a classroom situation and the right of deaf students to have quality education.

Abstract: Investigates a proposal for the self-education of teachers of Portuguese as a Second/Foreign Language (PSL/PFL), which is based on Widdowson's (1990) model (a Pramatics of Language Teaching). By using a syllabus developed in accordance with this theoretical model. I carried out an ethnographic investigation on the practices and beliefs of a beginner PSL teacher. The results obtained indicate that the education of PVL/PFL teachers could not consist only of readings of theoretical subjects and of tasks or suggestions for classroorn research. Data indicate that the process of teacher education should include a process of self-reflection, which would make it possible for teachers to evaluate both major theoretical paradigms and whatever theoretical knowledge produced by themselves. This could contribute to the development of these teacher’s critical thinking and autonomy.
