Abstract: Investigates the variation in tense-mood forms of hypothetical conditional clauses of Portuguese spoken in Rio de Janeiro and in the way these clauses are connected in actual discourse. Four variables are examined: future subjunctive, present indicative, gerund and juxtaposition. It starts with the description of the phenomenon at issue and lhe presentation of the theoretical foundation of the research, basically the principles of the theory of linguistic variation. Sampling procedures are then defined, followed by a description of methodological aspects concerning the gathering and treatment of the data. Next, a review of the literature on conditionals and verbal modality is presented, as treated by logic, traditional grammar and contemporary linguistics. In the main part of the dissertation, there is a description of the sets of factors which proved relevant for determining the variables above mentioned . Social factors and linguistic ones, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic - discoursive contexts related to the emergence of the variables are specified, and their mutual complementarities are established. As for social factors, it is shown that level of education is relevant to informants who have to function within institutions that value formal language. It is argued that a quantitative analysis of the contexts must be carried out for determining the variables that carry meaning. Thus, this dissertation proposes the need for a comprehensive framework which may provide explanation that will enlarge both the theoretical field and the knowledge of social practice of language, as it integrates the systematic and the discoursive, the linguistic and the social aspects of language.

Abstract: Presents a study of the Brazilian Sign Language (Língua Brasileira de Sinais - Libras) based on a very detailed observation of texts in this sign language. The main goal of this thesis was to detect marks of constituent segmentation corresponding to the boundary between propositions, and to identify the parts inside the propositions. The investigation tool used to isolate the units was the propositional structure. This instrument made possible to find embedded compositions and indicate its marks. The theory we based our analysis was the generative grammar in the version of the Distributed Morphology, and, more specifically, we accept the idea of Gaurav Mathur according to which in the architecture of the grammar the signs iconicity elapses of the interface between the spatial cognitive module and the articulatory-perceptual component of the grammar, i.e., a delayed, after-syntactic realization, the equivalent of the phonology. The study will be able to give subsidies for teaching written Portuguese to deaf people.

Abstract: Before the appearance of the first grammars on the Portuguese language and the first orthographic treatises, the punctuation in the texts printed in Portuguese had as a model the Latin punctuation. However, transferring the punctuation from a language into a language has led to a reduction and consequent reinterpretation of the function of the signals. If, for the Latin grammarians, the punctuation indicated whether the meaning was complete or not, for the printer, who was responsible for the spelling of texts in Portuguese, the punctuation began to mark boundaries of prayer. At the same time, the standardization of Portuguese began, and with this, the inventory of punctuation marks in vernacular texts began to grow. And, together with the capital letter, the punctuation began to fix the notion of sentence spelling. In short, the analysis, based on the theory of variation, provides evidence that: a) there were punctuation contexts and no punctuation contexts; b) coma and colon were used in the same contexts, but began to specialize their functions; c) coma was being introduced into vernacular texts; d) the spelling sentence was coming up.
