Abstract: We present a contribution to the knowledge of the Plankton, particularly of the ecobiology of Temora stylifera (Dana, 1849) Copepoda Calanoida, Temoridae family, of the coast of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Submarine Sewage of Ipanema and Guanabara Bay We make a morphological description of Temora stylifera in its adult stage and in the nauplius and copepodit stages. We study as well the species'biology, annual cycle, generations, biometry and biogeography. The application of enzymatic electrophoresis techniques rendered evident some methodological aspects allowing a better understanding of the Temora stylifera populations. With respect to the plankton, we developped the quantitative aspect, considering the large Phytoplankton groups, chlorophyll a and the pigmentary diversity. Regarding the Zooplankton, we put in relief the importance of the Copepoda. We tried to establish some related points, to find some of the links between the two coastal regions of Rio de Janeiro which undergo the impact of the urban and industrial wastes and the populations there existant. We point out some of their environmental, meteorological and hydrological characteristics.

Abstract: Several groups of ciliophora were found to be associated with marine invertebrates of the phyla Cnidaria, Mollusca and Echinodermata collected from litoral area of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Cnidaria (Anemonia sargassensis, Phylactis flosculifera and Bunodosoma caissarum) lodged in the gastrovascular cavities the Trofont of Foettingeria actiniarum (Claparède, 1863); Apostomatida. The Paleal cavity of the bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana, showed great quantities of one atypical ciliate Haplofriidae (?); Astomatida. The digestive cavity of the Neoteredo reynei lodged several Metanycthoterus rancureli Laval & Tuffrau, 1973; Heterotrichida. Numerous individual of Euplotes balteatus (Dujardin, 1841); Hipotrichida and Parametopus circulabens (Biggar & Wenrich, 1932) Groliére et al, 1980; Heterotrichida were found in the digestive cavity of one Echinoderma Lytechinus variegatus. The starfishes Echinaster brasiliensis, Coscinasterias tenuispina, Astropecten armatus brasiliensis and Linckia guildingii lodged the epibionte Licnophora sp. Claparède, 1867; Heterotrichida. In the Enoplopatiria stellifera we found the ciliate Trichodina sp. Ehrenberg, 1838; Peritrichida, for light microscopy we have employed the techniques of Chatton-Lwoff (1930) (silver impregnation), Bodian (silvcr proteinate stain), adopted by Tuffrau (1964 and 1967) and Klein (1958), The Feulgen nuclear stain was also used. The ultrastructure studies (SEM) were limited to the ciliates F. actiniarum, E. balteatus and P. circumlabens the last one was also observed by TEM.

Abstract: The aim of this dissertation, part of a wider study to determine the mammals of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, is to lay the foundations for future taxonomic work. The density-independent factors that might affect species' presence are reviewed, as is the history of mammal collecting and studies since the 16th century. A provisional species list for the state is also given. To exemplify the treatment to be given to the rest of the mammal fauna, the thirteen local species of Polyprotodontia are examined and described, with the aid of multivariate discriminant methods based on measurements of the marsupial skulls in the Museu Nacional collection, Rio de Janeiro. These analyses provide important results for the study of within-species variation and the formation of biogeographical hypotheses.

Abstract: Two species of sea anemones (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Actiniaria) from Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were studied. They are both from the subtribe Acontiaria Carlgren (in Stephenson, 1935). These anemones are Haliplanella lineata (Verrill, 1869) and a new genus, new species, both of the family Haliplanellidae Hand, 1956. Haliplanella lineata is cosmopolitan and had already been registered in Rio de Janeiro (Belém & Monteiro, 1977). The new species, up to now, has only been found in Guanabara Bay. The study of nematocysts was emphasized, highlighting their relevant contribution to the Actiniaria systematics. Weill's (1934) and Schmidt’s (1969, 1972, 1974) nematocyst nornenclature were used simultaneously. Besides the cnidae, aspects of their external anatomy and internal morphology were described; their systematic positions were also evaluated. The new species was included in the family Haliplanellidae due to the presence of three kinds of nematocysts in its acontia. It differs from H. lineata mainly in the presence of a sphincter in the former, absent in the latter. The diagnostic for the family was widened to accept the new genus within it.
