Abstract: Dentoalveolar trauma (DT) is one of the main oral health issues worldwide, encompassing both physical and psychological aspects. The primary etiologies of DT in adolescents, particularly in school environments, are related to falls and sports activities. This is a pilot study aimed at developing, validating the content, and evaluating the effectiveness of an educational material (EM) designed for adolescents, focusing on the prevention of falls in everyday situations and physical activities at school, with the goal of reducing DT in this setting. The first stage of the study involved the creation of the EM in the form of a poster, based on a literature review of databases and guidelines from the Brazilian Ministry of Education, Labor, and Employment, and Health. Subsequently, two groups of expert judges, one consisting of pediatric dentists and the other of professionals in the fields of Education/Design, were responsible for validating the thematic content of the EM. Following this, the poster was validated by the target audience to ensure its clarity and motivational appeal. To assess the effectiveness of the EM sixty adolescent patients from the clinics of the School of Dentistry at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (FOUFRJ) were interviewed between October and December 2024. The judges’ agreement was evaluated using the Content Validity Index (CVI), and the target audience’s validation was calculated using the Content Validity Coefficient (CVC). To evaluate effectiveness, the differences between the means and frequencies of correct responses before and after reading the EM were estimated using the Wilcoxon and McNemar tests (α = 0.05). The poster was validated, with a CVI of 0.89 and 1.0 by dentists and educators/designers, respectively. All calculated CVCs, ranging from 0.88 to 1.0, were considered acceptable. Based on the results obtained in this pilot study, it is possible to establish validated parameters for the ME developed and to dimension a sufficient sample to test its effectiveness, based on a main study, thus increasing the reliability of the results and the possibility of recommending the dissemination of its content, through health education actions with the target audience.

Abstract: This work consisted of the development of an informative technical product designed to guide various health professionals on the clinical aspects, diagnosis and treatment of acquired oral syphilis. The booklet presents the guidelines for its diagnosis in an objective and accessible way, highlighting the main clinical findings at each stage of the infection. In addition, it addresses treatment, emphasizing the importance of early detection and appropriate intervention to prevent complications, guiding health professionals with essential knowledge to effectively diagnose cases of this disease of epidemic proportions in our state and country. Made available on an online academic platform and widely disseminated, more than a thousand downloads were recorded in a period of just six months. In addition, a lecture event was held at the city hall of Rio de Janeiro, using the booklet as a reference, aiming to interact with health professionals, providing guidance and answering their questions live. The dissemination of this knowledge is essential to promote early and effective intervention, essential in reducing morbidity and changing the epidemic situation currently faced. It is expected that, by adopting these guidelines, there will be a positive impact on the control of acquired oral syphilis in our municipality, state, even in our country and abroad, since the online format allows a wide possibility of sharing information.

Abstract: In the first thousand days of a baby’s life, epigenetic changes may occur and definitively interfere with its development, benefiting or harming its entire life cycle. This study aimed to describe the knowledge of mothers or caregivers of babies with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) about oral health in the first thousand days of life. In the first multidisciplinary consultation at a blood center in Rio de Janeiro, mothers and caregivers answered a semi-structured questionnaire, containing open-ended and multiple choice questions adapted from a previously validated questionnaire, about sociodemographic conditions, health, access to health services, oral care for baby and breastfeeding during the first thousand days of life. The data collected between June and November 2024 were coded and subjected to descriptive analysis. The results showed that of the 47 mothers, 01 grandmother and 01 father interviewed, 59% had completed high school, 76% declared themselves black, and were between 16 and 49 years old. Only 8% of the participants reported knowing about the hemoglobin electrophoresis test, but all those who reported knowing about it defined the test as important for diagnosing SCD. Of the interviewees, 95.9% reported having had medical prenatal care and only 29% reported having had dental prenatal care. Most babies were born vaginally (57%). The majority (82%) were unaware of the importance of dental prenatal care, although 47% of the mothers reported having seen a dentist during pregnancy. The grade of satisfaction with dental care was not informed by the majority of the participants (53%). The majority (92%) reported knowing what cavities are and 88% said they knew about methods for preventing the disease. Brushing teeth, controlling sugar consume, using of fluoride or visiting dentist were indicated by 61% of the respondents. However, bleeding gums during pregnancy were reported by 59% of the study participants. As for babies with SCD, 45% were female, the majority aged between 0 and 6 months (67%). As for oral hygiene of toothless babies, 80% said they cleaned their mouths with gauze and filtered water, and when cleaning the baby’s first tooth, 49% said they used a toothbrush and toothpaste without fluoride. Breastfeeding was considered important by 81.6% of the participants. There is little knowledge on the part of mothers or caregivers regarding oral health in the first thousand days of life of babies with SCD. To disseminate information on this topic, the manual - The First Thousand Days of Life of Babies with Sickle Cell Disease: A Guide to Oral Health for Babies - was created. The expectation is to contribute to changing the reality of these babies with SCD, their mothers, caregivers and family members.

Abstract: Micronuclei (MNs) are biomarkers of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage associated with the development of mutagenic and carcinogenic alterations. Their frequency tends to increase in the presence of local and/or systemic alterations linked to inflammatory conditions, such as Periodontitis. This study aimed to quantify and compare the frequency of MNs in individuals with Periodontitis through the collection of buccal mucosa cells after non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT), with or without the adjunctive use of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). Methodology: The study was designed as a randomized clinical trial, in which twenty-two patients with Periodontitis were selected following a comprehensive periodontal examination, including visible plaque index, plaque-retentive factors, gingival bleeding, probing depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing and furcation involvement. After patient selection, randomization was performed through an automated lottery system, and participants were allocated into two groups: a CONTROL group, which received NSPT alone, and a TEST group, which received NSPT combined with aPDT. Additionally, patients received instructions on biofilm control and were provided with a standardized oral hygiene kit along with an oral hygiene instruction manual. Sixty days after the completion of treatment, cells were collected from the right and left buccal mucosa of each participant, and the MN count was performed according to the MN Cytome Assay. A total of 2,200 cells were analyzed, with 1,100 cells per group (CONTROL and TEST). Overall, 44 MNs were observed, of which 19 were detected in samples from the TEST group and 25 in samples from the CONTROL group. Statistical analysis was conducted using the independent samples Student’s t-test to compare the mean MN count between groups, revealing no statistically significant difference. Therefore, it cannot be concluded that aPDT combined with NSPT is associated with a greater reduction in DNA damage and, consequently, a lower MN frequency compared to NSPT alone.
