Abstract: This thesis presents a perspective on the relationship between fear and urban violence, highlighting the contemporary features of this association within the context of Rio de Janeiro. This urban fabric is approached as a qualitative case study, with temporal and situational variation, aiming to observe the interaction between these elements through social practice. Accordingly, the beliefs that construct a threatening aspect in certain dangers associated with this type of violence constitute the object of the research, making it possible to identify a specific — and simultaneous — process of sedimentation and recognition of that which becomes subject to manifestations of fear in everyday life. The general objective of this research is to understand how a set of beliefs weaves together dangers and fears in the construction of a particular interpretive framework regarding urban violence, also seeking to understand how individuals make use of this framework in their everyday lives. This dissertation argues that such a framework — referred to as the threatening aspect of violence — is the result of processes inherent to the social accumulation of violence, especially those that transform the phenomenon into a sign of diffuse danger, a specter that symbolizes urban chaos. Positioned within this perspective as an auxiliary tool, the threatening aspect of violence is identified as a specific repository of meanings, grounded in threats that qualify the significance of violence, capable of structuring ways of inhabiting the city, relating to others, and occupying space on a daily basis. The enactment of actions embedded in the interplay between ways of thinking and modes of acting within this framework is mediated by manifestations of fear, which recognize the established consequences of threats and guide protective strategies for the continuation of life.

Abstract: This thesis investigates how the implementation of racial quotas in higher education was addressed in Brazilian anthropological production between 2000 and 2010. The central objective is to understand how the debate on affirmative action impacted the discipline, generating conceptual disputes over race, nation-building, and the role of anthropology in the formulation of public policies. Specifically, the study examines how racial quotas became an anthropological public issue, identifying key theoretical divergences among researchers, analyzing the mobilization of concepts such as justice and affirmative action, and investigating the tensions arising from the different academic and institutional positions of scholars. To conduct the research, both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed, including an analysis of articles published in academic journals, a mapping of the academic trajectories of scholars involved in the debate, and their participation in public arenas, such as manifestos in favor of or against racial quotas. The longitudinal analysis made it possible to observe how anthropological production was affected by the controversy at different moments, while the study of intellectual networks highlighted the centrality of certain universities in the debate. The findings indicate that anthropology not only reflected the political and social disputes surrounding racial quotas but also underwent internal transformations, reassessing its categorizations and theoretical articulations.

Abstract: This research investigates educational inequalities in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on the impacts of socioeconomic and demographic conditions on students' adaptation to remote education and their engagement with school activities throughout this period. Measures of social isolation have brought profound changes in education, exposing and exacerbating structural inequalities that have impacted students and families in different ways. Using data from Pnad Covid, which is part of the Experimental Statistics category produced by Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), the research analyzes how variables such as gender, race, parental educational level and family income have shaped the educational experience in this context. The results show that parental educational attainment and family income have the greatest impact on student engagement and dedication to school activities during remote education. As these variables increase, with more educated parents and those belonging to the highest income deciles, there is a significant increase in the hours dedicated to school activities and in carrying out assigned tasks. While differences related to gender and race are also present, such as the higher commitment of women compared to men and the greater engagement among white students compared to Black students, these inequalities are less significant in this specific context. Socioeconomic conditions, especially parental educational level and income, are the main determinants of educational opportunities and adaptation to remote education.

Abstract: The thesis, resulting from extensive fieldwork, aims, through ethnographic accounts, to introduce the reader to a conceptual and sentient framework of an Amazonian way of life strongly connected to rivers and interspecific coexistence practices. In these practices, humans are not placed above other beings—whether plants, animals, entities, or rivers—but are rather embedded in a vital web of relationships. The goal is to relate the experiences and learnings from fieldwork to contemporary anthropological theory, particularly within the scope of what is known as multispecies anthropology. The thesis focuses on the river and the inhabitants of its banks in the municipality of Laranjal do Jari (AP). Situated at the intersection of land and water, urban and rural, as versatile and malleable as the thick mud that accumulates and dries on the shores, the residents of Laranjal do Jari stand out for their visceral relationship with the river that gives the city its name. Initially, the river is highlighted as a border between two states – Amapá and Pará – and between distinct urbanization models stemming from the same origin: the monumental Jari Project and its drastic impact on the region. Subsequently, the anthropologist's journey in search of their subject of analysis is described, during which distinctions between home and field dissolve, and they are affected by a flood, thus revealing different ways of relating to the river—both along its banks and in the hinterlands. The second part of the thesis stems from more recent and immersive fieldwork, during which the anthropologist accompanied a group of fishermen on a week-long expedition, among other experiences. Initially, Nova Esperança neighborhood in Laranjal do Jari and the igapó or island that provides land access to the Jari River in the summer, merging with it in the winter, are described, along with some of the residents' practices, such as tamatá fishing and piracaia. Finally, through the experience of fishing in the lakes of a former rice plantation, a story of resurgence from ruins is narrated, offering lessons that may prove valuable as we all learn to live in times of catastrophe. The results aim to position the Amazon at the center of a global discussion on climate and ecology, presenting, through interactions with inhabitants who have built their lives atop the remnants of grand projects, some ideas and alternatives for fostering habitability and envisioning possible futures in a world of ruins.
