Abstract: This dissertation investigates socio-spatial integration in Social Housing (HIS) projects, focusing on multi-family building complexes developed by the "Casa a Gente" Program in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The study differentiates integration from urban insertion, analyzing the relationship of the developments with their immediate surroundings and the articulation between buildings and the urban fabric. Based on discussions related to the historical process of socio-spatial segregation, the urban fabric, and urbanity, the research used bibliographic and documentary review methods, in addition to Raquel Rolnik's Urban Insertion Assessment Tool, to evaluate aspects of project design and integration of four HIS complexes. The survey revealed that socio-spatial integration is frequently treated superficially compared to urban insertion. The results show that, although there are advances in design quality, greater attention is needed for the development of true socio-spatial integration. The dissertation concludes that it is essential to develop social housing projects that promote socio-spatial integration to combat segregation and create more cohesive cities.

Abstract: This research addresses the impacts that urban megaprojects can have on a territory, analyzing
the socio-spatial implications resulting from the incomplete implementation of the Petrochemical
Complex of the State of Rio de Janeiro (COMPERJ) in Itaboraí, considering the historical and
political context of the moments of its implementation and deactivation. The central point of
analysis focuses on the consequences caused by the project’s deactivation, highlighting the
abandoned developments that currently manifest as ‘recent ruins’ in the territory and how these
structures affect local dynamics.Based on the analysis of concepts related to abandoned works,
ruins, memories, and the temporality of ruin, the study investigates architectural appropriations
in situations of abandonment, with a focus on those that occurred as a result of the deactivation
of megaprojects. Cases of abandonment and the different forms of appropriation that occurred
in different contexts are examined. The research conducts an in-depth comparative analysis
between the cases of Itaboraí and Detroit, in the USA, both cities that have undergone processes
of deindustrialization and urban decline, highlighting similarities and differences between these
experiences. Both locations share the phenomenon of developments that initially boosted
economic growth, but, after deactivation, came to symbolize the crisis.Through a methodological
approach composed of documentary analysis, image analysis, and cartography, the research
cataloged the recent ruins of Itaboraí and promoted a comparison with those of Detroit. The main
objective of the work is to extract relevant lessons about the appropriation of ruins, especially
‘unfinished ruins,’ that is, developments that were abandoned during the construction phase, and
to reflect on the challenges that these structures represent for urban planning. Finally, the work
presents an assessment of the lessons that Detroit and Itaboraí can offer for the debate about
the future of the municipality, considering the current context of the project’s resumption and the
potential of ‘empty, unfinished, and appropriated ruins’.

Abstract: The present work discuss the development and the evaluation of the architectural design of health units for ambulatorial attendance in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. The historical evolution and the design of these buildings, the description of the Health System, the current situation of the health attendance localization in the municipal district and which elements – criteria and/or parameters – to consider in the architectural design are approached. The environment performance of the construcion is evaluated according to five case studies, each one with a decadal characteristic design in the municipal district. The positive and negative points in the design and the new aspects according to the users' opinion and aspirations are considered.

Abstract: Undoubtly, the imense majority of buildings have their enclosures illuminated through vertical openings in their facades, known as "windows". An analysis of these windows, show us a series of caracteristics present in all situations, many of that very unfavorable related to its utilization as light sources for inner spaces. One of these caracteristics, is the enormous diference between ilumination levels near the apertures and deeper in the room illuminated by that aperture, i.e., the poor natural light distribution in a longitudinal section of that room. However, there are many architectural elements w hich can be used to improve this natural Iight distribution. This is exactly the case of a "lightshelf', which demonstrates a proved eficiency in direct insolation protection anel natural light redistribution in building interiors. So, it is very important to study this element and to the develop tools to calculate its effects in the early phases of the architectural process, which is of great interest to architects anel engineers. This work tries to colaborate in the solution of this problem, presenting a microcomputer simulation program which allows the user compare resulting illuminating levels in a roam lightned through an exterior vertical window, with anel without the presence of a lightshelf, and visualize the results in a numerically and grafically way. So, helping to measure in a cienbfically way, the eficiency of this so far subutilizecl element in our archictectural production.
