Abstract: This Thesis, affiliated with the field of Text Linguistics, focuses on the recategorization processes of female protagonists and antagonists in the fairy tale “Cinderella,” in the versions by Perrault (2013) and Grimm (2021). The justification lies in the fact that, belonging to Children's and Young Adult Literature, fairy tales hold significant influence on society, explicitly or implicitly shaping generations and their positions. From this, the hypothesis posits a referential process filled with argumentative orientations (Koch; Elias, 2020 [2016]) that contrast the female characters, potentially marking a sexist ideological perspective. Thus, the general objective is to demonstrate, through referencing, that female protagonists are described following the stereotype of fragile, passive, and suffering women, while female antagonists follow the pattern of being strong, active, and aggressive. The specific objectives are: i) to analyze the referential chain RC1 of the discourse object “protagonist” (Cinderella), verifying the construction of stereotypes; ii) to analyze the referential chains RC2 and RC3 of the discourse objects “antagonists” (stepmother and stepsisters); iii) to observe how the intertwining of the main referential chain with the secondary chains may contribute to the recategorization of the protagonist. For this purpose, the theoretical foundation draws on various materials, such as those by Coelho (1991), Tatar (2013), Colomer (2003, 2017), Michelli (2004, 2020), Feres (2023), regarding Children's and Young Adult Literature; and by Bentes (2000, 2001), Marcuschi (2001, 2008), Mondada and Dubois (2003), Cavalcante (2003, 2011, 2013), Cavalcante and Santos (2012, 2014), Koch and Elias (2020, 2017), among others, regarding referencing. The corpus consists of two classic European fairy tales translated into Portuguese. Methodologically, a qualitative approach to the corpus was employed, complemented by a quantitative perspective on the recurrence of certain uses and their sense effects.

Abstract: Human beings constantly seek to find meaning through words, one of the main forms of&#xD;
expression and social interaction. From this expressive need, beyond neologisms, emerge&#xD;
lexical innovations marked by phonetic-phonological modifications that attribute new&#xD;
connotations to vocabularies. This is observed in forms such as cabelitcho, gatim, and véia,&#xD;
constructed from processes of palatalization, deletion of the final unstressed vowel, and&#xD;
vocalization, respectively, which confer values of affectivity, humor, playfulness, or even&#xD;
euphemism. This work investigates innovations such as these in Brazilian Portuguese from&#xD;
the perspective of Usage-Based Functional Linguistics (UBFL), considering that language is a&#xD;
dynamic system, constantly updated by the creativity of its speakers, especially in digital&#xD;
contexts. The research corpus consists of written occurrences collected mainly from social&#xD;
media (Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok), categorized into five main characteristics:&#xD;
palatalization of plosives, deletion of final unstressed vowels, vocalization, depalatalization,&#xD;
and onomatopoeia. The methodology combines qualitative analysis – based on concepts from&#xD;
the LFCU (Language Pathology and Communication), such as perspectivization,&#xD;
analogization, constructionalization, frequency, and indexical function – and quantitative&#xD;
analysis, through perception tests applied to informants of different age groups and genders.&#xD;
The results show that sound processes transcend purely phonological conditioning,&#xD;
consolidating themselves as discursive-attitudinal resources that index social identities,&#xD;
reinforce affective bonds, and contribute to the conventionalization of new forms. Thus,&#xD;
sound intentionality expands the lexicon of Brazilian Portuguese and demonstrates the&#xD;
creative and active capacity of speakers to renew the language based on sociopragmatic and&#xD;
subjective motivations.

    <title>Construções intensificadoras de verbos no português brasileiro: usamos pra cachorro</title>

Abstract: Intensification is a widely recognized linguistic phenomenon in natural languages, characterized by the use of formal resources that amplify, reinforce, or emphasize the degree of properties, events, or states of affairs. With this phenomenon in view, this dissertation investigates non-traditional intensifying expressions associated with verbal predicates in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, focusing on constructions formed by (i) nouns denoting units of measurement, (ii) nouns referring to bodies of water, and (iii) prepositional phrases containing animal nouns, as in chorar litros ‘cry liters’, sorrir mares ‘smile seas’, and trabalhar pra cachorro ‘work like a dog’. Grounded in the assumptions of Functional-Cognitive Linguistics (Bybee, 2010) (Traugott &amp; Trousdale, 2013), Usage-Based Construction Grammar (Goldberg, 1995) and Sociolinguistics (Labov, 1994; 2001; 2010), the study adopts a view of intensification as a semantically and argumentatively motivated resource that is socially acquired and discursively shaped. The 1017 intensification data were collected from electronic corpora (Sketch Engine and Corpus do Português), with particular attention to discursive practices circulating in digital environments. The analysis combines qualitative and quantitative procedures, taking into account linguistic and extralinguistic variables such as verb type, subject properties, animacy, evaluative content and constructional productivity. The study aims to map, describe, and categorize the form-function patterns of these constructions, examining their distribution, degree of conventionalization, and behavior as possible allostructions of a more abstract intensifying metaconstruction. In doing so, the dissertation contributes to the understanding of constructional variation in Brazilian Portuguese and to ongoing discussions about the role of metaphorically motivated units — such as measures, animals, and bodies of water — in the sociocultural conceptualization of intensity and in the construction of discursive and argumentative effects. The analysis shows that the choice among intensifiers is not random but constrained by factors such as event evaluation, subject type, the replicability of the situation in experiential reality, text genre, and degree of communicative proximity. The constructions under investigation promote hyperbolic readings, frequently associated with discursive effects of exaggeration, dramatization, and expressivity, and may occur either in isolation or in enumerative sequences that establish scalar gradation. Finally, it is argued that these constructions reflect a sociocultural conceptualization of intensity anchored in the speaker’s embodied experience, whereby states, processes, and events are understood and evaluated through physically and culturally salient parameters. By mapping these constructions within a network of intensifiers in Brazilian Portuguese, this research contributes to the description of constructional variation and aligns with the goals of the PREDICAR Project – Formation and expression of complex predicates and predications: stability, variation, and constructional change! (PREDICAR), providing empirical and theoretical evidence for the analysis of intensification from a socioconstructionist perspective.

Abstract: This dissertation aims to compare the grammars of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and European Portuguese (EP), based on an analysis of the syntax of clitics, one of the main factors of distinction between both varieties. To achieve it, besides grammatical aspects, this work takes into account factors linked to Brazilian socio-history that influenced the formation of BP, such as the contact with Bantu languages and the history of Brazilian (il)literacy, which adopted EP as a model, despite the different paths followed by both varieties. We highlight the contributions of Pagotto (1998), who attests that enclisis was used in Brazil during the 19th century to imitate EP syntax, although proclisis was dominant in Classical Portuguese, which had reached Brazil during the colonial period. We conducted a statistical analysis based on Parametric Sociolinguistics, associating the Theory of Variation and Change (Weinreich; Labov; Herzog, 2006 [1968]) to grammatical descriptions of the phenomenon based on generative syntax studies. The data comes from theatre plays written between 1840 and 1990, in which we expect to find an approximation between 19th century and early 20th century EP and BP, in addition to the subsequent implementation of a Brazilian norm that avoided proclisis until the first decades of the 20th century, followed by the recovery of aspects found in CP and the implementation of Brazilian innovations in the system. Meanwhile, EP remains stable, since it had already gone through a series of changes that favored enclisis in the absence of proclisis attractors. The hypotheses are based on the fact that Brazilian playwrights from the beginning of the 19th century were part of a literate minority that corresponded to 0.5% of the country's population (Houaiss, 1988 [1985]). Educated in Lisbon or in exclusive Brazilian schools, they reproduced Portuguese syntax, opting for enclisis and using clitics that, in BP, are the result of schooling, not of language acquisition. We argue that the indefinite clitic se, and the third person accusative o and the dative lhe are frequently used in 19th - century plays due to the same attempt to bring BP closer to EP. Nevertheless, their abandonment over time and the preference for variant forms reveal that such forms have never been part of Brazilians’ natural repertoire. The statistical analysis uses the Goldvarb-X logistic program. The results confirm the attempt to reproduce EP in the early synchronies and clarify the moment in diachrony when Brazilian plays begin to reveal the grammar of vernacular BP.
