Abstract: This research proposes the inclusion of data pertinent to the body of the bibliographic description of antique books regarding to the elements of "Handbook for the entry of monograph data in Minerva Base" from the theories and practices adopted in the Library of Rare Works of the School of Fine Arts of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - EBAOR-UFRJ. The objective is to justify the use of the rules of the International Standard Bibliographic Description for Older Monographic Publications (Antiquarian) - the ISBD(A), for the description of antique books, corroborating the proposal of standardization and optimization of the bibliographic record in UFRJ. It considers as object, the antique book and its peculiar bibliographical and bibliological aspects. It emphasizes that detailed cataloging of the antique book is configured as a patrimonial security resource – since it singles it out, giving the institution proof of its ownership – and assumes a strategic role in the management of the antique collection. The research is exploratory and descriptive, based on bibliographical and documentary research. The research proposal aims at the standardization and qualification of the bibliographic records of antique books in UFRJ, highlighting the importance of the Manual in supporting the librarian service.

Abstract: This research aims to demonstrate the processes of formation of “Biblioteca da Academia Imperial de Belas Artes (AIBA)”. We will analyze its historic aspects with the purpose of rebuilding the process of formation of a collection which keeps in itself the institutional memory of the artistic education in Brazil. We will analyze the way the acquisitions were made and the actions taken, aiming to characterize what today we would call “policies for collection acquisition”, by the directors of AIBA. In this aspect, two characters stand out: Felix Emilio Taunay (1795-1881), director of “Academia” from 1834 to 1851 and Manuel de Araujo Porto-alegre (1806-1879), director of “Academia” from 1854 to 1857. Our objective is to analyze the constitution of this collection focusing on the formation of the artists in the 19th century. The solid bases practiced by Taunay in the method of teaching lasted great part of the 19th century. It was also in this moment that the basis of the collection for the “Biblioteca” was constructed, giving directions to future actions of other directors that came to direct the “Academia” and the “Biblioteca”. The management of Porto-alegre, from 1854 to 1857, and “Reforma Pedreira” set up by him were a landmark in the education of AIBA, with the inclusion of new chairs, even influencing the evaluations for the acquisitions of new work that would become part of the collection of the “Biblioteca”. In this context we will characterize the processes of formation of the collection of the “Biblioteca da Academia Imperial de Belas Artes (AIBA)” in the light of the literature and of primary documents available in records and libraries, among which, the historic records of “Museu D. João VI” standing out the contribution of the collection of “Biblioteca” of AIBA to the teaching of “Belas Artes”, developed in the old “Academia Imperial de Belas Artes” in the 19th century. We concluded that the collection made it possible to enable the education of art in Brazil. The “Biblioteca da AIBA” spread culture and also served as a space for sociability. The “policy for the collection acquisition” was well succeeded for having AIBA invested in the acquisition and encouraged the donation of works of art of interest to the formation of artists, also for having the directors and secretaries as selectors, mainly Taunay and Portoalegre that were highlighted in all the process of formation of “Biblioteca”, guiding future directors of AIBA that continued the work of selection and acquisition. The Professors Comissions provided a positive effect, since the appointed professors were experts in the area. The analysis of primary documents produced in the 19th century allowed the identification of this innovative experience to the time, whose knowledge isn’t available in other sources of study. The teaching model used by “Academia”, with the support of an updated and capable “Biblioteca”, even for the European standards of that time, brought so efficient results, that modified a whole generation of artists. The “Biblioteca da Academia” was privileged to have been made at the time of the nation building. It was a generation committed to the independence, so they brought the European culture to Brazil through books, enabling that the “Academia” became efficient making artists and representing Brazil through the art. The data obtained in the research will be used as instrument of management and safeguard to the rare and special collection of “Biblioteca de Obras Raras da Escola de Belas Artes” of UFRJ.

Abstract: Based on a practical methodological approach, this paper discusses thematic indexing in the rare theses of the FMRJ. Its general objective is to recommend guidelines for the Indexing Policy of the Library and Information System of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro for rare theses, which constitutes its technical scientific product. It starts from the assumptions that inadequate or insufficient indexing can lead to the erasure and forgetfulness of this S&T bibliographic heritage, promoting the loss of information about the materiality of these works, decreasing the value of the collection as well as hindering subsidies for its preservation. From these premises, this research proposes as a model the use of DeCS for subjects related to the Health area and the creation of a glossary to standardize the information in the Content Notes and Summary, indicating the preservation of these works, used by the first generations of doctors trained at the Faculty of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract: The convex hilltops of soil-mantled landscapes have been attributed to the action of diffusive (slope-dependent) processes like creep, rainsplash, and biogenic activity. Although many models based on the diffusion equation have been proposed, little is known about the effects of climatic and tectonic oscillations on the convex form. Such oscillations are expected to impose changes on the transport rates and/ or the incision rates at the base of the hillslopes. I specifically focus on how equilibrium convex hillslope profiles respond, both in terms of form and sediment flux, to one-step and cyclic oscillations in the diffusion coefficient or incision rate. Numerical and analytical solutions of the one-dimensional diffusion-type equation are obtained for initially convex hillslopes evolving under diffusion coefficient and incision rate values derived from field measurements. One-step changes, either in the diffusion coefficient or in the downcutting rate, are then imposed and the time required for the new equilibrium condition to be attained (relaxation time) is estimated. By characterizing the time-scale of morphological adjustments of these convex hillslopes, and consequently their relaxation times, we can determine whether the hilltop convexities that we observe in the field today represent equilibrium or relict forms. ln addition, the effects of climatic and tectonic oscillations on diffusive hillslopes are modeled by imposing cyclic changes, in either the diffusion coefficient or in the incision rate, in the form of steps, sine waves, and 180-constrained oscillations. Two-fold step changes in the diffusion coefficient or in the downcutting rate result in relaxation times of approximately 70 thousand years and one million years, 2 for 25 m and 100 m long hillslopes, respectively. The time-scale of such morphological adjustments varies depending on whether the hillslope profile is tending to increase or decrease its curvature through time. Toe new equilibrium condition is first developed at the base of the hillslope and then propagates upslope. A dimensionless graph is presented which allows the estimation of the relaxation time of convex hillslopes from estimates of diffusion coefficient, incision rate, magnitude of change, and hillslope length. Such a graph could be used in field studies. Step and sine oscillations in the diffusion coefficient cause the sediment flux from the hillslope to eventually oscillate around the initial equilibrium value, which is set by the downcutting rate. When these oscillations happen in the downcutting rate, the sediment flux oscillates around a new equilibrium value located mid-way between the lower and upper equilibrium values, associated with the minimum and maximum imposed downcutting rates, respectively. The sediment flux is shown to be in phase with 180-based oscillations in the diffusion coefficient whil cumulative effects are observed when these oscillations take place in the incision rate. Because the relaxation times estimated here are much longer than the frequency of the climatic oscillations observed in the last few million years, I argue that most of the convex hilltops of soil-mantled landscapes are likely to represent forms that are far from being truly time-independent morphologies. The results also suggest that these convex hilltops represent forms that, once formed, are difficult to be perturbed with modest, but reasonable, variations in the diffusion coefficient or in the incision rate. Consequently, these convex hilltops may represent, at least for the case of long hillslopes, forms that developed before the climatic and tectonic oscillations that took place during the Quatemary.
