Abstract: Markers of viral hepatitis types A and B were investigated in 91 patients. Results allowed the patients to be classified into 4 group, the first (37 patients) characterized as hepatitis A, the second (35 patients) as hepatitis B, the third (11 patients) with neither A nor B markers and the fourth (8 patientes) with markers that could not be clearly interpreted. An analysis of clinical and biochemical aspects and of the course of disease revealed that group A included a significantly greater number of children and young adults than group B in wich the mean was above 30 years. The latter was also the case in group C but in this as in group D, the number of patients was insuficient for statistical significance to be established. Analysis of biochemical findings revealed a preponderance of bilirubin levels of 10mg% in group A as opposed to group B. In contrast, alkaline phosphatase levels were higher in group A than in group B. These variations were interpreted as resulting from the mean age difference between the two groups. Transaminases levels (SGOT and SGPT) were not significantly different in the two groups.
