Title: Contar a nação: a literatura infantojuvenil moçambicana como território de memória e (re)existência
Author(s)/Inventor(s): Silva, Luciana Soares da

Abstract: Focusing on narratives addressed to childhood and seeking within them traces of memory,
tradition, and resistance, this study examines contemporary Mozambican children’s and
young adult literature as a space for the symbolic elaboration of the nation in the post-
independence context. The research analyzes six works that, through the articulation of
text and image, reinscribe forms of knowledge rooted in oral tradition and African
cosmologies, proposing alternative ways of knowing the world and imagining the future.
Grounded in a qualitative approach to literary and visual analysis, the study engages with
the epistemologies of the South, as formulated by Boaventura de Sousa Santos and Maria
Paula Meneses, and with the epistemology of ancestry proposed by Eduardo Oliveira,
recognizing orality, collective memory, and non-Western knowledge regimes as
legitimate forms of knowledge production. The analytical trajectory demonstrates that
these narratives are not limited to “telling stories” to children, but actively participate in
the dispute over meanings related to identity, belonging, and nation. Although written in
Portuguese, the works incorporate Bantu-derived terms, narrative structures of orality,
and local symbolic references, transforming the language of the colonizer into a vehicle
for cultural appropriation and epistemic resistance. The young reader thus emerges not as
an incomplete subject, but as a knower and agent of memory, connected to ancestral
continuity. By mobilizing themes such as communal solidarity, female protagonism, and
ethical reconstruction, the analyzed works reconfigure the legacy of colonialism and post-
independence struggles, not by erasing their effects, but by elaborating them through
literary imagination. From this traversal of memory, myth, and imagination emerges a
literature that not only addresses Mozambican childhood, but conceives it as an active
force in the construction of plural national imaginaries. In doing so, contemporary
Mozambican children’s and young adult literature affirms itself as a territory of re-
existence and as a fertile field for decolonial pedagogical practices, offering significant
contributions to the Brazilian educational debate.

Transmutações em Rubem Fonseca

Title: Transmutações em Rubem Fonseca
Author(s)/Inventor(s): Medeiros, Leonardo Barros
Advisor: Oliveira Neto, Godofredo de
Abstract: This work aims to bring Rubem Fonseca's writings from the early years of the 21st
century into the academic debate, seeking to contrast them with his literary production
from the last four decades of the 20th century. Thus, in this work, we intend to develop
the thesis that the love relationships present in 21st-century literature are reactions to
loneliness, violence, and the excessively exploited, unrestrained sex of postmodernism.
The return of humanism in personal relationships, the encounter with the other, and the
realization that someone exists beside oneself is reflected in literature through a
conception of love as something sublimated. According to David Harvey (1993),
postmodernism underwent a profound alteration in the structure of feeling, "denouncing
all ornament as crime, all individualism as sentimentalism, and all romanticism as kitsch"
(p. 45). This change was reflected in the literary productions of the late 20th century and
is declining in the 21st century, as we will demonstrate in this proposed research.
Regarding postmodernism, Jean Baudrillard (2006:125) tells us: Hegemony puts an end
to domination. We internalize the world order and its operational apparatus, of which we
are hostages rather than slaves. Consensus, voluntary or involuntary, replaces good old
servitude. If domination involved an authoritarian system of positive values,
contemporary hegemony, on the contrary, involves a symbolic liquidation of all values.
The transformations that have occurred in the field of values result in a literature in which
affections are not in vogue. These values, emptied in postmodernism, now regain their
place and permeate the pages of the works analyzed in this study. In this sense, exploring
the theme of love in Rubem Fonseca's works makes us reflect on the anguish and
loneliness present in these unstable times, in which everything, even love relationships,
fades into uncertainty.

Sândi vocálico externo à luz da sociolinguística variacionista: uma análise da fala da Baixada Fluminense/RJ

Abstract: This dissertation investigates the configuration of external vowel sandhi in the speech of
the Baixada Fluminense region, situated within the theoretical framework of
Sociolinguistics and Prosodic Phonology. The study aims to analyze the linguistic and
social constraints governing the strategies of elision, diphthongization, and degemination.
The research proceeds from the premise that variation at word junctures is not random,
but rather a reflection of ordered heterogeneity, modulated by the interface between
grammatical structure and social identity. Methodologically, the study utilizes data
extracted from the Amostra Baixada, a corpus linked to the Program of Studies on
Language Use (PEUL/UFRJ), consisting of native speakers from Baixada Fluminense—
located in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro—stratified by sex, age, and schooling.
The results reveal that diphthongization acts as the majority norm in the community
(55%), consolidating itself as the preferred variant for maintaining syllable structure in
opposition to vernacular deletion. On the structural level, the investigation refuted the
classic hypothesis that the Phonological Phrase would act as the primary regulatory
domain; mixed-effects logistic regression modeling demonstrated that the apparent
prosodic regularity was, to a large extent, an epiphenomenon of lexical frequency. Once
lexicalization was controlled for, the grammar of sandhi revealed itself to be imperatively
governed by segmental constraints, confirming a cycle of phonetic feeding: the
integration of clitics to the host converts final vowels into functional pre-tonic vowels
which, subject to the vowel raising characteristic of the region, transform into high
vowels, providing the necessary articulatory base for the formation of glides and,
consequently, for diphthongization. In the social realm, the sex/gender variable emerged
as the determining vector of differentiation, with women significantly leading the
segmental preservation of the structures involved in sandhi and driving the consolidation
of diphthongization among younger generations, whereas men favor reduction via elision,
associated with patterns of covert prestige. In this context, the importance of this research
lies in ratifying external vowel sandhi as an eminently variable phenomenon,
demonstrating that the alternation between its strategies is not random or purely
mechanical, but constitutes a structured and systematic resource of the grammar of
Brazilian Portuguese, sensitive to the competition between internal and external forces.

Inserção não convencional da coda (r) ao final de verbos em textos digitais: condicionantes estruturais, lexicais e gráficos

Title: Inserção não convencional da coda (r) ao final de verbos em textos digitais: condicionantes estruturais, lexicais e gráficos
Author(s)/Inventor(s): Mendonça, Caio Mieiro
Advisor: Silveira, Eliete Figueira Batista da
Abstract: This thesis investigates variation in the unconventional insertion of the final coda (r) in verbs, as in a. esse álbum estar maravilhosooo; b. quem te viu e quem te ver; and c. perdir o resto da pose que eu tinha. The analysis draws on a corpus of texts published on digital platforms. This study extends the work of Mendonça (2021), who examined similar data in which the insertion of the grapheme <r> produced forms whose spellings coincided with the standard orthography of infinitives. The theoretical framework integrates principles from the Theory of Linguistic Variation and Change (Weinreich; Labov; Herzog, 2006 [1968]) and Usage-Based Models (Bybee, 2013, 2016 [2002]; Pierrehumbert, 2001, 2003). The study aims to understand (i) which internal constraints influence the variability of unconventional uses of the coda (r) in writing; (ii) whether the insertion of <r> is favored when it results in coincidence with the infinitive form; and (iii) what role lexical items play in the unconventional marking of <r> in verbs. The conditioning factors investigated include: i. final syllable tonicity; ii. word length; iii. preceding vowel; iv. graphic coincidence; vii. lexical item; and viii. data source. Results from two rounds of logistic regression using the Rbrul software (one with fixed effects and another with random effects) indicate that structural, lexical, and graphic factors significantly influence the phenomenon. The most relevant variables were graphic coincidence, final syllable, preceding vowel, and word length, as well as the interaction between word length + final syllable tonicity. The findings suggest that the graphic memory of infinitive verb forms contributes to the hypercorrect use of <r>, highlighting the roles of linguistic conditioning and frequency effects as underlying cognitive mechanisms in hypercorrection processes.
