Abstract: This dissertation addresses sustainability within the framework of the circular economy, using the life cycle of smartphones as its central theme. The main objective of the study was to develop an educational e-book aimed at high school chemistry teachers, providing pedagogical proposals designed to promote contextualization of disciplinary content and to encourage reflection on the socio-environmental and economic impacts of the smartphone production chain. A literature review conducted in academic databases and across PROFQUI’s educational resources revealed the innovative character of the proposal, as no previous publications were identified that explored the smartphone life cycle within the context of chemistry education. The methodology comprised two stages: the development of the e-book and its partial implementation in high school classes at a private school in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The ebook served as the central research resource, supporting the exploration of the life cycle stages – extraction, production, transportation, use, and disposal – and the integration of chemistry concepts such as the periodic table, redox reactions, hydrocarbons, electrochemistry, and separation of mixtures. The implementation involved first-year students produced posters addressing the disposal stage and its relationship with separation processes, while second-year students carried out two experiments related to production and use stages: copper plating of a coin and the construction of a series lemon battery, associated respectively with redox reactions and electrochemical principles. The experimental activity was assessed qualitatively through classroom interaction analysis and quantitatively through a Kahoot quiz, which yielded an average score of 69%, indicating satisfactory understanding of the addressed concepts. Poster production was evaluated qualitatively, revealing students’ ability to organize information, systematize ideas, and develop reasoned positions regarding the socio-environmental impacts and responsibilities linked to the final stage of the smartphone life cycle. The results also allowed the identification of strengths and areas for improvement in the educational material.

Abstract: The improper disposal of batteries is a major environmental issue, with direct impacts on public health and the environment. It is estimated that more than 20 thousand tons of batteries and accumulators are improperly discarded annually in Brazil. This type of improper disposal is one of the main sources of environmental pollution and poses serious risks to human health, especially in urban areas and vulnerable communities. The study focuses on the city of Maricá, where the environmental impact caused by improperly discarded batteries is analyzed, as well as the consequences for public health, considering the release of heavy metals. The research also emphasizes the importance of integrating sustainability and environmental education topics into high school chemistry teaching, through classroom experiments using recyclable materials from discarded batteries. The experiments were designed to promote playful and interactive lessons, where students could observe, in practice, the chemical and physical processes related to the disposal and recycling of batteries. These activities stimulated the dissemination of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 12 and 13, connecting the curriculum content with global sustainability and environmental responsibility issues. The work presents an innovative methodology, as in addition to practical lessons in a school located in Maricá, the electrochemical effects of improper battery disposal in saline solutions were observed, highlighting the environmental impacts and promoting critical reflection on the life cycle of these materials. The dissertation concludes that the use of practical experimentation is an effective strategy to integrate environmental education into chemistry teaching, raising awareness among students about the need for responsible attitudes regarding battery disposal and environmental care.

Abstract: Phenomena related to combustion are part of everyday life and involve fundamental chemical processes; however, in the school context, they are often addressed in an excessively theoretical and poorly contextualized manner. This dissertation aimed to develop and analyze an educational video focused on the backdraft phenomenon—a sudden explosion caused by the reintroduction of oxygen into confined environments—as an educational resource for teaching Chemistry to third-year high school students. The study was based on the observation that contents such as combustion, thermochemistry, and stoichiometry, although essential for understanding natural and technological processes, present learning difficulties when disconnected from real-life situations. In this context, an educational video was developed to articulate theory and practice through accessible and scientifically rigorous language, making visible phenomena that are difficult to experiment with in the classroom. The video “Backdraft: Fire and Chemistry in Action” integrated real scenes of the phenomenon, explanatory animations, and didactic narration, promoting the understanding of complex chemical processes and interdisciplinary dialogue between Chemistry, Physics, and Public Safety. The application of the video, the educational product of this dissertation, showed that the intentional use of audiovisual resources enhances learning when associated with active pedagogical mediation and reflective practices. Classroom discussions indicated greater engagement, curiosity, and the ability to relate content to everyday situations, revealing the potential of the resource for scientific literacy and civic education. It is concluded, based on questionnaires applied to students and teachers, that the inclusion of contextualized audiovisual resources, theoretically grounded and guided by pedagogical intentionality, contributes to a more critical and interdisciplinary Chemistry teaching.

Abstract: An analysis of the Basic Education Development Index (IDEB) in the state of Rio de Janeiro&#xD;
in 2019 revealed that it presented the lowest performance among the states in the Southeast&#xD;
region of Brazil. Regarding Chemistry education, this low achievement appears to be mainly&#xD;
associated with studest’s lack of interest in content-centered teaching approaches, in which the teacher assumes the role of the sole knowledge holder and central figure in the classroom. In this context, the present work proposes the development of a didactic tool containing everyday examples with a focus on Chemistry, aiming to support Chemistry teachers in their classes by promoting greater student engagement and improved understanding of chemical phenomena. To this end, the instructional material produced an e-book discusses the electrochemical processes involved in the production and use of costume jewelry, while also providing more comprehensive content on these topics, including mineral extraction, metallic bonding, and the general chemical properties of these accessories. The final material was developed with the collaboration of high school Chemistry teachers, based on their responses to a qualitativequantitative questionnaire. As a result of their contributions, both visual and content-related adjustments were made. Additionally, the material demonstrated potential to enhance student engagement and contribute to more effective learning in secondary education, as teachers expressed interest in adopting it in their teaching practice. It is concluded that the e-book produced represents an innovative and useful tool for Chemistry learning in basic education.
