Abstract: Background: The high prevalence and incidence of Arterial Hypertension and labor incapacitating cardiovascular diseases found in work capacity evaluations, as well as, the frequent labor, social, revenue and taxing problems due to the application of the law number 7713/52 related to “severe heart impaiment”, originated this study. Objectives: investigate the influence of Arterial Hypertension in the development of labor incapacitating cardiovascular diseases, as well as, the possible existence of a clinicai profile in patients with “Severe Heart Impairment” (SHI). Methods: 1200 charts of retired patients at SUPSAQ/SARE - RJ, from 1991 to 1999, were chosen for analysis, according to age, gender, profession, secretariat, years of labor, cardiovascular diagnosis, clinicai history, physical exam, arterial blood pressure and pulse pressure, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, readaptation, invasive procedures and presence of “SHI”. Results: the results revealed a high correlation and frequent association of Arterial Hypertension with Miocardial Infarction Angina Pectoris, Stroke, Dilated Cardiomyopathy, Chronic Renal Failure, Diabetes mellitus, Atrial Fibrillation, Aortic Stenosis and “Severe Heart Impairment". Conclusions: it was demonstrated an important link between Arterial Hypertension and labor incapacitating cardiovascular diseases and “Severe Heart Impairment”, as well as, the existence of a clinicai profile in patients with “Severe Heart Impairment”, in this cohort.
