Abstract: Introduction: Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that significantly affects patients’ quality of life. Dupilumab is the first biologic therapy approved in Brazil for the treatment of moderate to severe AD. Objectives: To characterize the sociodemographic and clinical profile, as well as disease severity, of the participants. To evaluate the progression of clinical scores at three time points in order to assess therapeutic response. To investigate the correlation between score variations, particularly between baseline and week 16. Methods: Adult patients with na indication for dupilumab use and access to the medication were included, all under regular follow-up at the service during the study period. After the first application, they were evaluated at weeks 0, 4 and 16. At each visit, disease activity and severity, pruritus intensity and impact on quality of life were measured using the instruments EASI (Eczema Area and Severity Index), IGA (Investigator’s Global Assessment), SCORAD (Scoring Atopic Dermatitis), NRS (Numerical Rating Scale for itch), and DLQI (Dermatology Life Quality Index). Results: A statistically significant variation (p < 0.0001) was observed over time across all assessment scores, including SCORAD, EASI, NRS, IGA, and DLQI. The EASI demonstrated a 71% reduction from baseline to week 16. Significant correlations were found among the assessment scales. Adverse events were limited to facial erythema and conjunctivitis. Conclusions: Dupilumab resulted in significant clinical improvement. The consistent use of tools such as IGA, EASI, SCORAD, NRS, and DLQI is strongly recommended for monitoring patient outcomes.

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic, which began in early 2020, underscored not only the importance of rapid vaccine development but also the deep inequalities in vaccine access across the globe. While high-income countries achieved broad immunization coverage, many low-income nations continue to struggle with limited availability. In search of more accessible solutions, our group explored the potential of peptide-based vaccines, known for their lower cost and ease of production. We analyzed serum samples from hospitalized COVID-19 patients with distinct clinical outcomes to identify key epitopes from the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. One patient who recovered (COV690) showed a strong antibody response, particularly targeting the receptor-binding domain, whereas a patient with severe disease who later died (COV841) displayed minimal reactivity. Based on this data, we designed a synthetic peptide containing the most frequently recognized epitopes. Although ELISA assays did not yield conclusive results, our microarray analysis and structural modeling suggest that these epitopes are located in crucial regions of the spike protein involved in viral entry. These findings point to the potential of peptide-based vaccines to elicit a meaningful immune response and offer a promising, more equitable path forward—especially in settings where access to complex vaccine technologies remains limited.

Abstract: This research seeks to analyze the construction of the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) based on the study of legitimization, processing, elaboration, approval and execution of law 12.305/10 and its decrees after 19 years of socio-environmental conflicts in the Brazilian National Congress. The objective is to identify the relationship between the characteristics that formed the PNRS based on the sociopolitical determinants and economic interests that have been present in two decades of legislative resolutions to date. For this purpose, we recomposed the history of the PNRS processing in the Federal Congress with the support of field research with the mapped actors. The aim was to understand how a law goes through a long period of time for approval without resulting in satisfactory regulations regarding better management of Brazilian solid waste. Next, we examine whether the sectors responsible for the legal determination known as shared responsibility are responding to legal determinations given the importance of a law that will soon complete 15 years of its approval. In view of this, the aim is to identify and characterize the socio environmental conflicts embedded in the legal obligation of the PNRS, in view of the economic interests of the industrial sector and, notably, how such conflicts streamline or hinder decision – making between the Public Power and business representation entities. Finally, we delve into the factors that the policy to be approved in 2010 would be immersed in and how the years of processing the law shaped these aspects, namely: the regional issue, planar issues, the organizational field of solid waste in the country and the on going dispute over incineration. The investigation is based on documentary and field research, through which it was possible to investigate the processes of legitimizing the waste problem as a socio-environmental problem, and the preparation and approval of the PNRS, understanding how some of the environmental conflicts surrounding waste management determined the final wording of the policy. Likewise, generators or representative sectors resist the responsibility of bearing the burden of Reverse Logistics without compensation from the public sector. The central role og the Ministry of the Environment can be seen in mediating between economic agents and institutions representing the segments involved with the effective implementation of the main guidelines of 12.305/10, decrees, related standards and their updates.

Abstract: The study of interactions between algal blooms and the formation of fog and mist in Guanabara Bay aims to deepen the understanding of how environmental and meteorological variables may influence visibility reduction events in this region, which holds significant environmental and socioeconomic importance in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Variables investigated included sea surface temperature (SST), salinity, visibility, tidal conditions, and climate indices, along with algal bloom data derived from Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellite images. Days selected for analysis were focused on periods when fog or mist was observed at the Galeão and Santos Dumont airports and availability of cloud-free satellite imagery. Analyses involved Pearson correlation calculations among variables, followed by the application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to identify multivariate interactions and complex patterns that would not be detected by simple correlation methods. The results indicated that although direct correlations among variables were generally weak, there were signs that algal blooms, interacting with factors such as SST and salinity, may contribute to fog formation, particularly in the inner bay areas, where oceanic water circulation is less intense. The application of PCA reinforced these observations, also indicating that La Niña events appear to intensify the frequency and duration of fog events at Santos Dumont Airport, suggesting a nonlinear interaction between oceanic indices and local variables. The findings highlight the importance of integrated approaches in analyzing complex atmospheric phenomena and suggest the need for future investigations that include continuous monitoring, additional data on water quality, and characterization of algal species in blooms for a more detailed understanding of these interactions
