Abstract: This dissertation comprehends the lived experiences of trans people in the formal labor market, positioning itself within the fields of sociology of gender, labor, and trans studies to analyze inequality regimes. The study examines job-seeking strategies, employment conditions, and daily experiences, drawing on literature regarding formal labor and the labor market. The research seeks to compose a general overview of social inequalities and formal work inclusion through the perspective of trans experiences. It also includes a contextualization of the Brazilian trans movement and policies aimed at the employability of the LGBTI+ population. The theoretical framework is based on sociological studies on trans themes and labor, primarily from the United States, which stem from the feminist perspective of "doing gender." The research method employs seven semi-structured interviews with trans individuals over eighteen years old who hold formal employment in private companies in Rio de Janeiro across different positions. Among the results, the analysis initially delves into the construction of the trans experience, examining how the categories of gender, race, body, and performance are intrinsically connected to experiences in the workplace. From this, the central discussion focuses on trans experiences lived within formal labor. The final analysis is structured around seven specific dimensions: occupation; education and the selection process, the closet and the support networks; diversity policies; attributed positive and negative aspects; the importance of work; and professional aspirations.

Abstract: This research aimed to investigate the dynamics of labor, control, and the production of social life through a case study of Fábrica da Estrela, a state-owned weapons manufacturer founded in 1808 and located in the city of Magé, Rio de Janeiro. The study was based on the hypothesis that the institution acted as a central agent in the production of social life, exercising forms of control that extended beyond the productive sphere and shaped everyday life in its surroundings. Methodologically, the study adopted a qualitative approach, combining documentary sources and field research, including visits to the factory and eight semi-structured interviews. The theoretical framework mobilized an articulation of Classical Sociology with 20th-century Sociology of Work and studies on national industrialization, focusing on investigations of state-owned companies and factories with worker villages. The observations demonstrate that the trajectory of Fábrica da Estrela synthesizes the contradictions present in the process of the Brazilian industry's formation, revealing how control, even when cloaked in care, can generate dependence, and its absence, vulnerability.

Abstract: Through an ethnography conducted between 2023 and 2025 at Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) locations in the northern part of the city of Rio de Janeiro, this research seeks to understand the process of preparing the body, adaptation, and sensoriality of street cleaners for work with urban waste. As a starting point for investigation, interviews and conversations were conducted with workers from different offices in order to understand their entry into this profession based on the Physical Aptitude Test and, subsequently, their effective work in the institution. In this research, the focus of analysis is, within the vast work of street cleaners, to understand how direct contact with waste, through sweeping and collection, allows these workers to have unique experiences and perceptions in this profession. In this work, it was also important to investigate how the perception of the presence of waste in the city is important to understand the performance of these cleaning professionals. Finally, this research also aims to present some of the social markers of difference such as social class, race, gender, and age to instigate questions about this profession, as well as to present how health and care are understood by these professionals.

Abstract: This research seeks to understand the role of video surveillance evidence in cases involving the conviction of military police officers for homicides committed in Rio de Janeiro between 2014 and 2015. The defined period of investigation, with cases beginning between 2014 and 2015 and ending in 2017 and 2023, was marked by high police lethality that did not translate into greater accountability for officers. On the contrary, it was perceived how state policies endorsed the practice of homicide by police officers as necessary for public safety. To understand how video surveillance images were crucial in holding officers accountable, considered rare in Rio de Janeiro, three case studies were conducted that meticulously reconstruct the dynamics of events based on criminal proceedings. The theoretical framework that shapes this research articulates discussions on police lethality, police impunity, video surveillance, the construction of counter-narratives, stigmatization, and contributions from the field of law to understand the valuation of evidence. The methodology is based on a combination of case studies and documentary analysis of criminal proceedings, supported by the analysis of complementary sources such as news reports and a documentary. The objective of this investigation is to reduce the gap in studies on video surveillance and police lethality by seeking to present the possibilities of using such images to convict police officers, thus contributing to discussions on video surveillance evidence and its possible uses with other elements of evidence to get closer to the truth of the facts. The findings of this research demonstrate that there is a positive appreciation and acceptability of video surveillance images as evidence. It is identified that this is possibly due to the understanding of the objectivity and neutrality of video surveillance images, something that is not observed with evidence produced by smartphones in most cases. Another important finding is the construction of a police narrative that justifies homicide, despite being filmed, which indicates that police officers may seek ways to suppress such evidence or are indifferent to this fact, betting on impunity as a rule. Finally, another fundamental finding of this research is how images are used in the construction of counter-narratives to the police version, which tends to criminalize and blame the victims posthumously.
