Abstract: Despite extant research on both culture and lean within the management scholarship, and the recognition of culture as key to a successful lean implementation, the specificities of their interplay are still under-researched. Moreover, service organizations still struggle to adapt the lean principles and practices that have emerged in the automotive sector. Therefore, the purpose of this doctoral thesis is to delve into the interplay between culture and lean implementation in service organizations. The starting point of the thesis is a systematic literature review, which synthesizes over two decades of publications according to the levels of national culture (NC) and organizational culture (OC) and maps which cultural dimensions foster or hinder lean implementation. The review unveils the lack of consensus in the literature and underlines some key paradoxes present in lean organizations. In order to scrutinize such paradoxes, the empirical stage of the research consists of two in-depth single case studies: one on the construction sector and the other on the healthcare sector. Both case studies take an abductive approach exploring the paradox theory as a theoretical lens. The findings offer a dynamic analysis of how culture influence lean implementation, and in turn, how the adoption of lean principle/practices directly impacts and changes the OC. Furthermore, the study presents the defensive mechanisms and counterbalancing actions that organizations adopt in order to manage the tensions derived from this interplay between lean and culture. This identification can guide managers when dealing with challenges of cultural transformation for a successful lean implementation. To the best of our knowledge, no previous study has explored the interplay of lean implementation and culture using a paradox theory lens.

Abstract: Financial statements are essential for asset pricing of a company. Fama and French (1992) have demonstrated with multifactorial models that size and book-to-market (B/P) explain stock returns. Penman et al. (2018) suggested that the unlevered variables and financial leverage explained stock returns. The objective of this dissertation is to study the relationship between the accounting and market variables with the earnings growth and stock returns, as well as the relationship between financial leverage and unlevered variables with stock returns. I perform a cross-section study with 161 shares of companies from IBRX100 and small caps indexes in the Brazilian stock exchange collected during the period from 2011 to 2016. Three analyzes were performed using linear regression to relate the dependent variables (earnings growth and returns) with predictor variables (B/P, earnings/price E/P, size, market beta and unlevered variables). Our results indicated that earnings growth presented a positive relation with E/P. Moreover, stock returns had a negative relation with B/P and unlevered B/P, and a positive relation with unlevered E/P and size. Financial leverage did not present significant results to explain earnings growth and stock returns.

Abstract: Evaluate the international competitiveness of Rio de Janeiro in the context of Rio 2016, under the point of view of attracting foreign investments. The theoretical framework evaluated allowed us to identify two relevant streams of analysis for this purpose: the global city theory and the new modalities of public management. Based on them, an international competitiveness framework for the city was developed, covering 4 research questions and 13 analysis categories. The methodology employed involved five semi-structured interviews with actors from Agência Rio-Negócios (Rio-Business Agency), the International Relations Coordination (CRI), the Rio Operations Center (COR) and the Special Secretariat for Concessions and Public-Private Partnerships (SECPAR), all linked to the city hall. In addition, the participant-observation method was used to evaluate the different narratives about smart city, in events occurred in Rio de Janeiro between 2015 and 2016. Among the results of the study, it was verified that the activism and the international competitiveness of the city grew considerably over the period from 2009 to 2016. Evidence of this was a 31.5% increase in the number of twinning agreements or partnerships with international cities and a 66.7% increase in the participation in international city networks. Moreover, evidences were identified of new public management, new public governance and new public service in the city management, in particular: frequent use of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), adoption of meritocracy systems, management by results, use of information technologies and e-government. Finally, of the 13 categories created, 12 pointed to the increase in the international competitiveness of the city in the context of preparation to the Rio 2016 Olympics.
