Abstract: This study investigates the territorial spread of Evangelical churches within the urban fabric of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, visible in the city's landscape, using the neighborhoods of Campo Grande and Barra da Tijuca as spatial samples. It explores a possible relationship between the quality of the urban environment and the neighborhoods' socioeconomic indicators with the quantity of religious spaces found within them. The issue is related to the vertiginous and isolated growth of the Evangelical religion at a national level, especially since the 1970s, notably in areas with low levels of social development and investment in urban infrastructure. Thus, examining the urban realities that encouraged or inhibited such spreading is justified. For the field of Urbanism, the analysis contributes to fostering the perception of Evangelical expansion through the lens of the built landscape in the urban environment, much as has been done with Catholic churches when studying the historical effects of their domination and influence on the formation of cities. The choice of Rio de Janeiro is based on the high concentration of Evangelical establishments and followers in the city, which was also the birthplace of denominations that are, today, among the largest in the country. The objective is to understand the distribution and setting of Evangelical spaces in the city's fabric and landscape, utilizing the two aforementioned neighborhoods which, for comparative purposes, were selected as a sample space due to their historical, socioeconomic, and quantity of religious spaces contrasts, despite being close and belonging to an area of the city once considered part of the same geographical division. Methodologically, the analysis began with mappings conducted at the municipal scale, using data from the 2022 Census, in order to understand the spatial distribution of religious addresses and other uses. Based on the axes of concentration and deconcentration of the mapped establishments, the neighborhoods for the analytical framework were determined. Supporting the contextualization of the phenomenon, in addition to a literature review and theoretical framework, surveys and syntheses of data regarding religious populations at the national and municipal levels were conducted, along with historical overviews of the neighborhoods and an analysis of their urban contexts, highlighting their main urban facilities and socioeconomic indicators, to finally arrive at the analysis of the churches within their landscapes.

Abstract: The thesis discusses the morphology resulting from the interaction between preservation action and city planning in urban operation areas, seeking to identify the contributions of urban management of cultural heritage in the fragmentation or integration of urban fabrics in areas of morphological ruptures in the Center of Rio de Janeiro, with a special focus on the Esplanada do Castelo. From the point of view of the theoretical-methodological framework perspective, in order to morphologically characterize the rupture areas, the thesis incorporates the metaphor of the notions of border and threshold introduced by Walter Benjamin in association with the concepts and categories of analysis formulated by authors in the field of urban morphology, primarily , those from the English School, Michael Conzen, Karl Kropf and Jeremy Whitehand. The analysis is applied in two complementary procedural dimensions, both aiming to translate the language of urban forms into the categories proposed on the scale of the Conzenian urban plan. The first aims to understand the process of formation of the area of the city where the analysis is established in the two moments before and after rupture in time/space: the demolition of Morro do Castelo. This analysis is developed through consultation of primary cartographic and iconographic documents and widely disseminated bibliography, as well from experiencing the location. The second scale of analysis concerns the understanding of another sectoral process established in the study area, intercepting the previously characterized macro formation process: the action of preservation on urban space. The analysis of this dimension is carried out by understanding the motivations that supported the decision-making actions of the agents of the federal heritage body, in light of the studies undertaken by Whitehand, and by translating the forms resulting from these decisions into the urban form of the area.

Abstract: The first decades of the twenty-first century have revealed a close relationship between the city of Rio de Janeiro and major international events. However, when looking at earlier historical periods, it becomes evident that this connection is not exclusive to contemporary times, having also manifested itself on previous occasions. This dissertation investigates the relationship between the hosting of international mega-events and the process of constructing the city’s image of Rio de Janeiro. To this end, it examines two distinct episodes: the International Exhibition of the Centennial of Brazil’s Independence in 1922 and the 2016 Olympic Games, analyzed individually and subsequently in an articulated manner. The development of the research begins with an approach to the notions developed around mega-events and the image of the city. It then investigates the conception, implementation, and spatial and symbolic repercussions of these episodes in Rio de Janeiro. The cross-reading of two events separated by their political, social, and urban contexts constituted a methodological choice aimed at understanding the recurrence of strategies that, through these urban spectacles, channeled narratives and interests characteristic of their respective periods, enhancing specific forms of visibility and promoting updates to the city. In doing so, the study seeks to explore the capacity of these phenomena to play an active role in the construction of Rio de Janeiro’s image.

Abstract: This work has focused on the identification of landscape units of Island of dependencies (Guinea Bissau) as indicators of their future ordination. The identification of landscape units is based on the interrelationship of components geobiofísicos and human actions that define and reconfigure the landscape units with distinct characteristics and functions which, once assessed, allowed the classification of different landscape units and, consequently, their potentials, limitations and abilities. This classification
may serve as an instrument for future ordering of the landscape of the island.
