Abstract: This thesis analyzes multifamily residential buildings in the city of Rio de Janeiro, with regard to urban building standards and architects' design practices, observing the production of a built environment that establishes physical and spatial relationships with its immediate surroundings (understood as urban context) or not. It is based on the hypothesis that it is possible to elaborate a legal and planning instrument that allows a flexible interpretation of its demands in order to promote contextualized architectural and urban designs, in which there is a connection between the project practice, the lot, the building and the city. The main objective is to broaden the debate about the role of normative production and the architect in the production of multifamily residential buildings and to establish new bases for discussion on the future of the production of urban norms for the city of Rio de Janeiro through the proposition of a new form of urban code, based on what we call Contextualized Urbanism: the Contextualized Urban Code (CUC). Adopting the microscale of the lot as a parameter, the main urban norms of Rio de Janeiro were analyzed from the beginning of the 20th century under the optics of (de)valuation of the contextualization of buildings and their translation on the urban morphology and on the production of multifamily residences (through analysis of 36 developments and eight architectural and urban designs in the city). For the elaboration of the CUC, we also analyzed reference cases that contribute to the promotion of contextualized developments and to the valorization of the architecture design. It can be concluded that the CUC is relevant in the sense of expanding the possibilities of producing multifamily residential buildings that promote a higher quality of urban life and that advance towards the recognition of environmental and built pre-existences and promote the harmonization of urban morphology while valuing the use of public space.

Abstract: This thesis addresses the role played by the urban trees in the design of Rio de Janeiro's public open spaces. It looks particularly at the contribution of the landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx in this city. The research has as a case study four areas located at Rio de Janeiro's waterfront: Praça Salgado Filho, Parque do Flamengo, Praia de Botafogo and Avenida Atlântica. These areas reveal Burle Marx importance for the construction of the city's landscape, as well as his remarkable contribution concerning the use of urban trees in public spaces. Three categories of analysis are developed in this study, covering different aspects of urban trees: the botanical aspect, related to the use of species in open space design; the relationships established between urban trees and urban design; and finally the links developed between people and trees. The research highlights the unique way Burle Marx articulates the trees in his public open space design schemes, taking advantage of the species' characteristics and aesthetics potentialities, within an arrangement so that the trees organize and structure the open spaces' design. This study also brings a list of 31 trees and palms introduced for the first time in public spaces, one of Burle Marx's hallmarks in terms of landscape design, which was a very important step in enhancing the horticultural vocabulary available for urban and landscape designers. Finally, the research points out to the different values and meanings the trees hold for local population, bringing a contribution to a new trend in the academic literature dedicated to the study of urban trees.

Abstract: Discuss the possibilities in planning a sustainable urban basin drainage occupation, in order to achieve multifunctional goals: abiotic, biotic and cultural. The case study comprehends a hydrographic system on the west zone of the Rio de Janeiro's city. It has irreplaceable environmental and cultural potentialities that are being threatened due to the imminent urban expansion. The theoretical basis presents several topics related to ecological landscape planning. It starts with a brief history of its origins in the late XIX century, delineates its development during the XX century and emphasizes its substantive role in the sustainable development awareness during the last decades. It also supports effective inhabitant's participation during the entire process. The area was characterized to better understand its complexity and its ecological, cultural and economic opportunities. The drainage basin has significant natural ecosystems fragments that supply irreplaceable ecological services. This is an inter and transdisciplinary research. The assessment started searching for available data in both public and academic institutions, site trips and photographic documentation during a period of over three years. The area was mapped in several aspects, such as land use and vegetation cover, topography, flood and land slide vulnerable areas among others. The result was a geobiophysical analysis and diagnosis. Sacio-cultural issues addressed dwellers participation formally and informally. Cultural landscape reading and analysis of people's experiences were obtained through in-depth individual and group interviews. Environmental and cultural readings, analysis and diagnosis led to a green infrastructure proposal in two scales: drainage basin and neighborhood. Landscape ecology principies were applied to conserve or mitigate landscape pattern and processes.

Abstract: Cities are passing through many transformations as the use and the fast development of new technologies grow together. Many so thought fundamental conceptions for the ubanistic field have been called in question to the point of losing the importance they had before. The íncidence and the effects of these transformations, which dismantle some of the traditional urban institutions, are now under critical analysis by many thinkers. Among them, Paul Virilio, Manuel Castells and François Ascher are the most renowned. Their views often agree, often disagree and often complement each other - and this results in an important contribution to the understanding of the contemporary city and urbanism. The present work intends to identify the concepts and themes on which are based the different interpretations of these authors, aiming to contribute to a conception of the contemporary city.
