Abstract

The National Museum's Catalog of Rare Works was what the publishing market needed to shake up the world of rare books. This could not happen at any other time, if not on such an emblematic commemorative date for Brazil. In order to contribute to the celebration of the bicentennial of Independence of Brazil, the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) launches its first printed catalog of the collection of rare works. It publishes records of manuscripts and classic works that represent the historical and cultural heritage accumulated throughout our history. Highlights include the Torah from the 1300s that belonged to Pedro II and the incunabula Historia Naturale, written by Pliny (The Elder), from 1481, for the Empress Leopoldina. The initiative seeks to make available, not only to specialists, but also to society in general, a fruitful catalog of rare works. The National Museum's library plays an important role here, as it provides access to knowledge that is the result of scientific research over time.
