| Abstract: | Uma ideia muitas vezes apregoada é a de que as políticas ambientais impedem ou prejudicam o crescimento econômico, desestimulando a implantação de indústrias ou impedindo a derrubada de florestas para abrir espaço para a agropecuária. Estudos recentes, porém, revelam que não há uma relação estatística entre o desmatamento e indicadores econômicos, e que a industrialização no país, fortemente apoiada em setores de elevado potencial poluidor, não proporcionou um crescimento sustentado, que trouxesse benefícios para toda a população. |
| Abstract: | It is often said that environmental policies prevent or hinder economic growth by discouraging the establishment of industries or preventing the clearing of forests to make way for agriculture. Recent studies, however, reveal that there is no statistical relationship between deforestation and economic indicators, and that industrialization in the country, which is heavily based on sectors with a high polluting potential, has not led to sustained growth that brings benefits to the entire population. |
