Museu Nacional: passado, presente e futuro

Abstract

The idea for this book stemmed from a collaboration between the National Museum and the Embassy of Portugal in Brazil, through Camões, IP. The proposal was to produce a publication that would simultaneously present aspects of the Museum's past, address issues of its present, and reflect on its future. However, we didn't want to produce a book that presented only historical facts or even limited itself to academic issues. The idea was to do something different that would engage the reader and engage them in exploring the story, told not through the eyes of people who worked or were connected to the institution, but rather through the lens of collections and objects. In other words, we sought to bring the public closer to the history of the National Museum/UFRJ, which, in many ways, is intimately linked to the history of Brazil itself, through the buildings and collections that make up the institution's collections. These include statues, the meteorite, the ornaments, the woodwork, the books, and much more.
