dc.description.abstract	The goal of our research is to study the social origins and the cultural background of the women painters who participated of the General Exhibitions of the National School of Fine Arts located in Rio de Janeiro. Our thesis is included in the perspective of cultural history and based on an interdisciplinary approach to understand the women painters' position in the Brazilian Society of the turn of the century, their image of the world and of themselves, reflected in the images and paintings. The study of the lives of a sample of 209 artists revealed that realism prevailed in their style and the predominant thems of their paintings were taken from daily life of the bourgeoisie, to which most them belonged. The analisis of these artists is developed within the framework of the cultural background of the Brazilian republic and its contemporary reflections.	en

dc.description.resumo	Designado o tema de nossa pesquisa como "A mulher e as artes: as pintoras durante a Primeira República, no Rio de Janeiro", pretendemos estudar a condição artística das mulheres participantes das Exposições Gerais da Escola Nacional de Belas Artes. Insere-se no campo da história cultural, aliado à nova tendência historiográfica, o trabalho por nós desenvolvido. O nosso tema é a mulher, ou melhor dizendo, a mulher pintora. Para lançar luzes sobre as imagens produzidas por elas a partir da análise interdisciplinar, temos que entender suas relaçóes com a sociedade e seu próprio imaginário social. Esse imaginário é constiuído por suas representações de mundo, ou seja, os gestos pictoriais pelos quais essas artistas se colocavam em cena. Das 209 artistas estudadas, nota-se que nas suas produções artísticas, o realismo burguês é a forma de expressão usada por elas. Enfatizam temas extraídos do cotidiano dos segmentos mais favorecidos da escala social. A dissertação integra as mulheres - artistas - na corrente histórica das realizações culturais da Primeira República, assim, promovendo nítida visualização do posicionamento das pintoras da atualidade.	pt_BR
