A construção das múltiplas imagens do parque do Flamengo no Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

This work is dedicated to the study of the meanings of urban parks for the population and, particularly, Flamengo Park, for cities. Focusing on Rio de Janeiro, the research discusses the symbolic, personal, cultural, and social values ​​and meanings in relation to the park. In theoretical terms, the park is approached as a cultural landscape, and therefore subject to different interests of diverse groups over time. The methodology used was diverse, including questionnaires, interviews, participant observation, behavioral observations, bibliographic and iconographic research. Three main themes stood out and are developed throughout the work: the long process of creating the park; the meanings of the park for the local community, public authorities, and the city as a whole; and the experiences that people have of the park. Through these themes, the study reveals how a plurality of values ​​and meanings are constructed and negotiated over time and space, thus giving rise to the multiple images of the park – images that transform it into one of the symbols of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The research also points to the importance of considering the values of communities in the planning, implementation, and management of urban green spaces.
