O carnaval na avenida: a organização socioespacial de um grande evento no entorno do sambódromo da Marquês de Sapucaí, Rio de Janeiro – RJ

Abstract

Rio de Janeiro, like other cities, is a place of cultural expression where various festive events have a strong influence on the daily lives of its residents. The Carnival at the Sambódromo da Marquês de Sapucaí is one of them. It mobilizes various social agents, creates special arrangements (for mobility, security, urban cleaning, etc.), and articulates a complex network of interests. In this way, this research looks at the effects of the sociospatial organization of the Special Group Samba School parades in the area surrounding Marquês de Sapucaí. An event of this magnitude, the result of a specific combination of social effort in space and time, can even change the entire logic of how the city functions. In addition, a whole set of fixed and flowing elements are reorganized and mobilized throughout the city. Therefore, dealing with the internal organization of the city, the central question of this research is: “How does the event of the samba school parades held at the Marquês de Sapucaí Sambódromo transform the spatial organization of the central area of the city of Rio de Janeiro?”. In order to answer this question, the methodology was divided into four stages. The first resulted from data collection (carried out mainly through fieldwork and hemerographic surveys). The second stage included preprocessing and cross-referencing the data collected. The third involved analyzing and interpreting the information. Finally, the fourth and last stage involved discussing the results obtained. After carrying out the research, the results indicate that there is a complex articulation between the different social agents, both public and private, and the way in which each of them acts in the production of the event. In addition, the results show that certain spaces in the surrounding area have new uses or patterns of occupation that are oriented by the event and that this spatial reorganization is mobilized by the orientation of the flows and fixtures that are essential to meet the demands of the parades.
