Autonomia, solidariedade e igualdade : uma releitura da urbanização da favela de Brás de Pina sob a ótica do saber popular

Abstract

This master's thesis studies popular knowledge as legitimate forms of urban space production, based on experiences observed in the urbanization process of the Brás de Pina favela in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro at the end of the 1960s. The qualitative research relied on bibliographic, documentary, and oral source analysis, allowing for an understanding of the plurality of knowledge and the conflicts that permeated the territory's production process. Consultations of neighbors' photographic albums, popular archives of local associative movements, and oral accounts highlighted the protagonism of local agents and a repertoire of knowledge that supported the development of self-managed practices, guided by community principles, capable of challenging power relations and ways of inhabiting the city. It is hoped, therefore, that this dissertation will contribute to making visible the experiences lived by the residents of the Brás de Pina favela during the period under study, highlighting their forms of resistance and the construction of new narratives about the powerful production of knowledge "produced by the people for the people" as an instrument of struggle for housing. More broadly, the study highlights the need for a revision of the historiography of urban planning, recognizing favelas not as spaces of deprivation, but as territories that produce knowledge.
