Legendando a dissidência: não binariedade, tradução e recepção

Abstract

This dissertation investigates the use of gender-neutral language in audiovisual translation, focusing on the subtitles of the third season of the series Sex Education and the reception of these subtitles by non-binary individuals. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the research brings together applied linguistics, queer translation studies, subtitling, and discourse analysis, drawing on analytical tools from linguistic anthropology and queer linguistics: linguistic ideologies (Kroskrity, 2004, 2016; Oliveira & Fabrício, 2022) and performative indexicality (Borba, 2020). The main objective is to identify the use of gender-neutral language in the translational choices found in the subtitles of the third season of Sex Education and to analyze the reception of these subtitles by non-binary viewers. Specifically, the study seeks to: (1) examine the role of subtitling in making non-binary people visible; (2) analyze the linguistic ideologies that circulate in the subtitling process; and (3) understand how this queer audiovisual translation is received by non-binary viewers. The guiding research questions are: How does non-binary language appear in the subtitles of the series? What is the relevance of non-binary subtitling in audiovisual media? Can queer translation contribute to the visibility of non-binary characters and people? The methodology involved analyzing excerpts from four interviews: one with a translator/subtitler of the series and three with non-binary individuals who watched the subtitled third season. The dissertation argues that subtitling (Díaz-Cintas & Remael, 2014), as a social practice, can be a site of political struggle and affirmation, and that queer translation, by incorporating gender-neutral language, functions as a form of resistance and dissident visibility.
