Arquitetura indócil: As casas, de Luiza Neto Jorge, e as dimensões da Casa Portuguesa

Abstract

This research establishes a critical dialogue between the series of poems “As casas" (1964), written by the portuguese poet Luiza Neto Jorge, and a few passages of the books A Nossa Casa (1918), A Casa Portuguesa (1929) e Casas Portuguesas (1933) written by the portuguese architect Raul Lino. These are creations from different artistic fields and historical times that have in common the fact that they explore images of the physical and symbolic space of the house. Fragmentary, polyphonic and working with the materiality of language, Luiza’s poems show personified houses that break the spacial and moral dimensions of the domestic environment. Years before that, during the first three decades of the 20th century, Raul Lino created a kind of archetype of what would have been best in the tradition of building popular houses in Portugal. The Casa Portuguesa would also embody the best of the portuguese people’s spirit. By bringing together these very different artistic creation, this research aims to observe what are their ethical and aesthetic particularities. As well as have a better understanding of the ways in which – by playing with the space and the ambiences of the house – Luiza Neto Jorge tensions a traditional imaginary about domestic life.
