Escola Angel Vianna (1983–2023): 40 anos de dança, movimento e emancipação

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the Angel Vianna School in Rio de Janeiro, located at Jornalista Orlando Dantas Street, No. 2 in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. Opened in 1983, it was initially named Espaço Novo: Center for Studies of Movement and Arts. It became the Angel Vianna School in 1985, when the Professional Qualification Course for Technical Dancers received authorization from the Department of Education. The aim of the research was to investigate its trajectory and its emancipatory action in the field of Brazilian dance, over a period of 40 years (1983–2023). The methodology used was documentary research, with a qualitative approach. This methodology implied two simultaneous and complementary directions: one of a more descriptive nature, comprising the collection of information present in the documents of the institutional collection examined, and the second, a critical analysis of the material, observing the historical, social and political context of the institution's trajectory. The theoretical framework used was also multiple: researchers from the Vianna School, Miller, J., Neves, N., Tavares, J.R. Ribeiro, J., and the Critical Theory of T. W. Adorno, particularly in his concept of emancipation, which proved to be fertile in the dialogue with the pedagogical practice of Angel Vianna. As a result, it was verified that this institution had, and continues to have, a remarkable and lasting influence in the field of Dance in Brazil, with emphasis on its pioneering role in the inclusive approach.
