| Abstract: | This dissertation proposes an investigation about Riobaldo's ways of telling in Grande Sertão: Veredas, constructed, in this reading, through the intersection of the fields of literature and psychoanalysis. An initial question guides and sustains our reading journey: What leads Riobaldo to tell his story to a specific interlocutor throughout the entire narrative? With this, we launch ourselves to read a narrative structure that erupts in a dialogical frame, since there are two characters on the scene, but who are not in a dialogue. Complex as it is, the monologue does not entirely encompass the specificity of Riobaldo’s speech, for the presence of the interlocutor is essential for him to be able to address the spoken word. Recognizing in Guimarães Rosa’s novel such a configuration of speech and listening emerges as an invitation to engage in articulations with psychoanalysis. Our hypothesis is that certain psychoanalytic notions—free association, transference, transfer love, and the subject supposed to know—are present within the structure of Riobaldo’s speech, leading him to tell and (re)write his own story. The theoretical framework adopted in this study is interdisciplinary, contemplating theorists from literary criticism, narratology, and Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. During the reading, we analyze aspects of the character's storytelling experience that, as it flows, approaches the edges of analytical experience. |
