Abstract

This dissertation aims to analyze the discourse markers tipo/tipo assim and né based on interviews conducted with students in the 3rd year of high school. The investigation is grounded in the contributions of Functional Linguistics and Sociolinguistics and presents, in light of interactional practices in the school context, a qualitative-quantitative analysis of the

communicative strategies represented in the speakers’ usage. To this end, the pragmatic- discursive functions and usage trajectories that emerge in the organization of topics and

speaking turns are considered through the process of grammaticalization of these markers. The corpus of this study comprises ten individually conducted interviews with young people aged 16 to 19, aiming to reveal the functional, interactional, and social aspects surrounding the analyzed usage. Moreover, this study seeks to corroborate, drawing on the contributions of Trudgill (1972) and Labov (1990; 2001), how extralinguistic factors, such as speakers’ gender, influence the use and selection of these elements in students’ discursive trajectories. In this way, the work integrates usage analysis with interaction and social mapping, delineating the multifunctional nature of these items, which demonstrate the capacity for linguistic reorganization and attest to the speakers’ communicative competence in the emergence and refinement of discursive strategies.
