Abstract

The middle valley of the Paraíba do Sul is a strong national reference, sedimentary part of the memory of the most recognized economic axis of the country's historic republican. The physical and social marks of this relatively recent history blend into the old memories of earlier periods. Inscribed, such memories, in the worn physiognomy of the hills and hills, and in architectural elements that witness a past of slavery, coffee and extensive livestock. Reports and tales (of old hauntings) still maintain a diffuse memory that spreads by settlements dispersed by the edges - not always beautiful - of the great river.
