Uma passarela para a modernidade: da Avenida Central a Avenida Rio Branco, o desfile do século

Abstract

The idea of the present work arose from the observation of the transformations that took place in the form and appearance of the Rio Branco Avenue, from its inauguration, like Central Avenue, in 1905, until the present day. Assuming that space does not dissociate itself from the social structure and expresses, concretely, each historical phase in which a city is specified, the destruction of the Central Avenue and the gradual replacement in its formal aspect, by the Rio Branco Avenue, should be studied the from its expression as a synthesis of the socioeconomic transformations that took place in the capital of the country from which the Avenue itself became a symbol, as a vehicle for the propagation of an entire ideology and instrument of rupture with the old colonial city, which had hardly expanded in three centuries and means of existence. The avenue would then be the forerunner of a new order, of the modernity that urged to manifest itself, even before the extinguishing of the lights of the nineteenth century.
