| Abstract: | O trabalho traça um panorama histórico das favelas cariocas, desde sua formação em finais do século XIX até a década de 1980. A quantificação das favelas representa uma dificuldade para o estudo e para o planejamento urbano. Apesar do enfoque que tem sido dado aos estudos sobre favela, este é um problema ainda longe de solução. A definição de favela, o uso de metodologias diferenciadas e o próprio medo de pesquisar em campo fazem parte de um conjunto de fatores que deixam ambiguidades em relação aos dados tratados sobre as favelas. |
| Abstract: | The work traces a historical panorama of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, from its formation in the late nineteenth century until the 1980s. The quantification of favelas represents a difficulty for study and urban planning. Despite the focus that has been given to favela studies, this is still far from a solution. The definition of favela, the use of different methodologies and the fear of researching in the field are part of a set of factors that leave ambiguities in relation to the data about the favelas. |
