Abstract

Rome had many enemies, some were women. We want to highlight the history of one of them: Teuta, the pirate queen of the Illyrians. The story that has been told us was written in Greek and Latin and portrayed Teuta and the Illyrians with great harshness and prejudice: they were barbarians, criminals and unstable in their emotions, which jeopardized their decision-making. But we don’t agree with this bias and are going to offer new interpretations, emphasizing the diversity of the phenomenon and certain misogynistic aspects of the discourse that Políbio constructed in his work “Histories”, which we intend to contrast with some trends of Foucault, acting as committed historians fighting for gender equality, in special, and for justice to subaltern people, in general, rehabilitating the historical trajectory of those who have loosen the power struggle through the historical process. In light of these issues, we offer this case study to remind us that we owe Teuta fair recognition as a historical figure and possible bastion of feminism.
