Dimensão simbólica na cidade (maravilhosa) neoliberal: construção de subjetividades na produção social do espaço na Barra da Tijuca

Abstract

Based on the premises of the deep urban transformations in Rio de Janeiro city to host the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016, Barra da Tijuca was transformed to be the main center of the Games and a new centrality of the city. In this context, through the co ordination of powers that is transformed and expanded, public and private investments are channeled to the region as of 2010. The intervention of the State is oriented in the provision of infrastructure. Supported by neoliberal principles made possible by means of financing instruments, in particular the special concession of public services, the main public intervention and management tool is the private sector. Among the various effects, the location of the city dwellers is determined according to their social class, subjecting identity and culture to market logic and violating rights legitimized by popular support for games. The urban interventions together with the new legal regulations and new institutional agents gestating the city symbolically manipulate the construction of subjectivity in the region of Barra da Tijuca that tends to be monopolized by specialists in representation. There is a great capacity to shape reality through a relative autonomy of the symbolic systems of social structures and their constitutive power, shaping shared representations of the world.
