Abstract

This work investigates the cultural process of human rights led by a sui generis movement called black cinema, from the perspective of critical human rights theory. This study examines how black cinema has contributed to human rights, exploring its emancipatory and transformative potential. Social struggles and resistance are understood as the foundations of human rights, manifesting themselves in a society marked by social inequalities, in which art plays a central role as an expression of contestation and symbolic activation, according to Herrera Flores. The research adopts an interdisciplinary approach, articulating perspectives from black feminist studies (Lélia Gonzalez, Patrícia Hill Collins, bell hooks), human rights criticism (Herrera Flores, Vanessa Berner, Thula Pires) and decoloniality (Aníbal Quijano), as well as Brazilian Critical Racial Theory (Cida Bento, Abdias do Nascimento, Guerreiro Ramos). With this theoretical basis, it seeks to understand cinema as a cultural product that both reproduces and transforms social relations, being a crucial vehicle in the construction and deconstruction of imaginaries about race and identity. The analysis is based on the theories of Herrera Flores, which broaden the scope of critical reflection by revealing social contexts and silences, promoting dialog in the search for alternatives. In this way, cinema is investigated as a political and cultural tool capable of reinterpreting and intervening in the world.
