Abstract

This study aims to analyze how socio-historical material is represented in the contemporary sertão of the novels Galiléia and Dora sem véu, by Ronaldo Correia de Brito. Furthermore, we intend to examine the structural aspects of the books, with an emphasis on the narrators' position and their choices of narrative focus. Considering one of the main axes in Raymond Williams' definition of modern tragedy, we start from the hypothesis that the works can expose, through tragic action, a relationship of order and disorder, which sustains various modalities of systemic violence that has served and continues to serve as the basis for a conservative modernization in Brazil. In this context, tragicness is determined by the narrators' position. In addition, we investigate whether the tragic action in the books constitutes a mechanism for exposing social disorder, and whether the tragic is a fundamental structural element in the novels for exposing the contradictions of the country's political and social formation. Finally, we aim to understand to what extent the narrators embody the formative processes of modern Brazil, since they can be read as belonging to a segment of the country that perceives the contradictions of our formation but is unable to extricate itself from the dynamics arising from them.
