De Iguassú a Duque de Caxias: o processo de urbanização do início do século XX ao final da década de 1970

Abstract

This research analyzes the process of urbanization in Duque de Caxias. To this end, we resort to a historical period that extends from the beginning of the twentieth century until the late 1970s. The research focuses on some important factors such as the arrival of the railroads, sanitation works, construction of access roads and the city of Caxias in Rio de Janeiro, emancipation, the arrival of migrants and the proliferation of subdivisions. We seek to portray as the interventions promoted by the government that changed the geography and occupation of the city. Through an extensive research for the literature and documents could corroborate the literature on the Lowlands, we understand and consider as the proximity of the federal capital which had a decisive importance for population growth and urban changes. We passed through the formation of the dormitory town until the formation of a sub-center within the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. The proximity of the Rio de Janeiro and the fact Caxias was a transit area for goods coming from the interior toward the federal capital hosted a curious occupation of land in the city, making it an edge of the city of Rio de Janeiro where workers from the lower classes Just settling. But there that was only possible due to sewage works and the arrival of railroads which promoted the occupation of the area the growing number of subdivisions.
