dc.description.abstract	The objective of this study is to analyze the occupation of the city of Rio de Janeiro from 1838 to 1906. Based on the primary sources consulted, especially the urban legislation promulgated in this period, we began a questioning of how the State acted in the mode of occupation of urban land. The Codes of Posture of the City of Rio de Janeiro were chosen for the elaboration of the research, material that consists of the set of municipal laws that were implanted for the whole city. Legislation includes standards for health, education, hygiene, commercial and industrial activities, construction, etc. Our interest was limited to studying the laws that mentioned the building norms or any other decrees that indirectly portrayed the occupation of the city.	pt_BR

dc.description.resumo	O objetivo desse estudo é analisar a forma de ocupação da cidade do Rio de janeiro no período de 1838 a 1906. Com base nas fontes primárias consultadas, especialmente a legislação urbana promulgada nesse período, iniciamos um questionamento de como o Estado atuou no modo de ocupação do solo urbano. Elegeram-se para a elaboração da pesquisa os Códigos de Postura da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, material que consiste no conjunto de leis municipais que foram implantadas para toda a cidade. A legislação inclui normas para saúde, educação, higiene, atividades comerciais e industriais, construção etc. Nosso interesse limitou-se a estudar as leis que mencionavam as normas de construção ou quaisquer outros decretos que indiretamente retratavam a ocupação da cidade.	pt_BR
