Resumo

This work aims to estimate the economic losses caused by the exhaustion of mineral resources in Brazil and its impact on domestic product measures. To this end, a definition of sustainable income was constructed that considers the depletion of natural resources and enables the elaboration of a System of Environmental Accounts as an extension to the conventional System of National Accounts. To determine these measures of sustainable income, estimate depletion factors for the main minerals produced in the country. These results allow us to discuss the need to differentiate mineral products in mineral policy initiatives according not only to the value of their reserves but also to the rent generated in their production. Finally, the sustainability of the mineral extractive sector is discussed in light of conventional mineral GDP measures adjusted according to estimated depletion factors.
