| Abstract: | Este artigo analisa a literatura recente e as evidências empíricas sobre essa questão. Começando com uma breve análise dos programas de ajuste macroeconômico (Seção 2), ele destaca as principais críticas feitas em termos de sua eficiência econômica, equidade social e apoio político (Seção 3). Uma análise geral das consequências ambientais da reforma da política econômica é apresentada na Seção 4. As ligações entre a dívida, os programas de ajuste e o meio ambiente são exploradas em mais detalhes na Seção 5, onde são resumidos os estudos de caso empíricos e nacionais. Por fim, a Seção 6 apresenta as principais conclusões desta análise. |
| Abstract: | This paper reviews the recent literature and empirical evidence on this issue. Starting with a brief review of macroeconomic adjustment programmes (Section 2), it highlights the main criticisms made in terms of their economic efficiency, social equity and political support (Section 3). An overall review of the environmental consequences of economic policy reform is presented in Section 4. The links between debt, adjustment programmes and the environment are explored in more detail in Section 5, where empirical and country case studies are summarised. Finally, Section 6 presents the key conclusions of this review. |
