Abstract

This book focuses on a small seventeenth-century grammar about the Kimbund written in Brazil by the Portuguese Jesuit Pedro Dias (1621? -1700). The focus, however, prioritizes the reading of the work on the part of its recipient first: the missionary for whom Ketwondo was not a native language and which began in the language. It is sought here to gather evidence that part in Kimbund in the work prioritized a vocalization, concretized in the oral reading, is not a direct understanding of the text, in foreign language for the reader. The book looks for information on a perspective with the treated missionaries or the written record of a New World language, and seeks to demonstrate to what extent the reading is processed in a context with images and with the differences with respect to timeliness.
