Racismo religioso e ensino de história: como lidar com o preconceito contra religiões afro-brasileiras

Abstract

This master's dissertation is situated within the field of discussions concerning ethnic-racial relations and aims to contribute to the fight against racism, especially religious racism, as well as to the promotion of respect and appreciation of diversity. Starting from the understanding that African-matrix religions represent an important feature of Brazilian cultural identity and that, despite this, they have been constantly targeted by acts of religious intolerance motivated by racism, we emphasize the importance of history education playing a role in helping to demystify the stigma that has historically been built around these religions. In this perspective, we propose to address the topic in basic education classrooms, using newspaper reports about the police repression that affected Afro-Brazilian religions until the mid-1940s and, contrasting this with the acts of religious intolerance reported in the present day.
