Abstract

Objective: to investigate the perception of mothers using the Kangaroo Method about its applicability in the Neonatal Unit of the Maternity School of UFRJ. Method: Approach qualitative. of the descriptive type, developed at the Kangaroo Intermediate Care Unit of the Maternity School at UFRJ. Data collection was through interview semi-structured with eleven mothers performed 24 hours before hospital discharge. In the analysis and treatment of the information collected, we opted for Bardin's content analysis technique. Results: They point out that mothers understand the value of the method for the recovery of their children, and that particular dilemmas and difficulties can compromise and even prevent their participation in the program. Thus, the support of the health team is essential for the mother to be able to work in the Kangaroo Method. Conclusion: we conclude that for mothers to understand their role in the care and recovery of their child, changes in the look and posture of the multiprofessional health team are essential, as these mothers must be guided with a view to acting as co-participants in the care of the newborn. -born.
