Resumo

The discussion of the Right to the City is not recente, however it seems to be limited to the general perspective of the segregation in the use of the spaces of the city by the rich and the poor, without considering the diferente uses and utilization of the public spaces by various social groups found in the big cities. The text below ains at analysing the (un)used collective spaces by a group of fathers and mothers in the neighbourhood of Tijuca, and also how gender influences the amount of time spent at home or in the streets. In other words, being in porivate or public spaces. As a conclusion, the research points that because men are more frequente in the urban spaces they reach a higher level of conscience about the enclaves experienced by the classes that can affoard them, as well as they understand this fact as a barrier to the formation of citizens. The women are left with fear and resignation, without demonstrating revolt or even a greater question of where this malaise originates. They associate fear with problems of violence and public safety and fail to identify the female embarrassment of being on the street.
