Projeto de requalificação urbana: a acessibilidade no eixo Igreja Matriz de N. Sra. do Carmo - Capela do N. Sr. dos Passos em Carmo, RJ

Abstract

The Catholic tradition in the city of Carmo, Rio de Janeiro, is preserved through its processions, which take place in the streets of the town center: Folia de Reis, Holy Week, Corpus Christi, and the festivity of the Patroness – Our Lady of Carmo. These celebrations attract hundreds of devotees, tourists, and local community members, many of whom return to the city specifically to participate in these festivities. However, these routes have low legibility, accessibility and not prioritize pedestrians. This dissertation presents a proposal for the requalification of the axis connecting the Church of Our Lady of Carmo to the Chapel of Our Lord of the Steps, which hosts tradicional Catholic processions in the city. The research is qualitative (participatory) and stems from the recognition of the municipality, a review of the concepts and project references that underpin it, bibliographic and field surveys, and the author’s personal experience. The analyses resulted in maps, drawings, and photographs that highlight the main aspects of the area, its uses and activities, the religious routes, their state of conservation, pavement, and the geometry of the urban layout. The proposal includes alterations to the urban layout of the roads, the planting of trees, urban furniture and lighting. By doing so, it aims to preserve the city’s intangible cultural heritage and promote the right to walkable city while respecting the religious heritage of Carmo.
