Resumo

The objective of this study is to analyze the energy demand and level of activity of passenger transportation in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, seeking to understand how each income class is affected by urban mobility. To do this, it was used the transport and travel time data of the Household Budget Survey (POF) and National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), both from IBGE, to create modal matrices disaggregated by income class for the years 2002 and 2008. Afterwards, a hypothetical scenario was analyzed, in which the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) was considered in the analysis period, in order to analyze the impacts not only in the time of displacement but also in the working time required for each income class to pay for such displacement (generalized speed variables). As a result, there was a 4% increase in the generalized speed of the lower income families. Thus, it has been shown that urban mobility policies focusing on private vehicles aggravate social inequalities, so it is necessary to propose measures of public transportation that impact especially the lower classes.
