Abstract

The objective of the study is to dimension the evolution of “green jobs” in Brazil, presenting its tendency throughout the decade of 2010, and to discuss the needs and challenges of professional formation and skills necessary for the qualification of the Brazilian workforce to fit in a green labor market. The results showed that there was no expansion of green jobs in the Brazilian economy during the analyzed period, characterized by a deep process of re-primarization. There are important sectoral exceptions, but they remain relatively isolated, and the expansion in providing green skills training has been much smaller than initially expected. To move forward, a strong emphasis is needed on the importance of improving workers’ understanding of the general principles of sustainability and why this is increasingly important in the labor market, as well as focusing on more specific technical aspects of qualifications.
