Resumo

Heavy metals contamination in highways's adjacent soils is a serious problem on a global scale, as these species can be potentially toxic and carcinogenic to human health and can impact the surrounding ecosystems. This type of contamination is directly related to traffic activity and wear of the road infrastructures. Thus, the present work aims to evaluate heavy metals concentration in adjacent soils of the Washington Luiz highway in the State of Rio de Janeiro, as well as to study the phytoremediation's potential of Crotalaria juncea specie to rehabilitate those soils. From the results, it was possible to observe that Pb, Zn, Ni and Co concentrations found on the soil analised were higher than the reference quality limits defined by CONAMA Resolution 420 and by CETESB. Only Zn presented values above Prevention Values, but below Intervention Values. In relation to phytoremediation, C. juncea growth and biomass production, after 45 and 90 days of planting, indicated good adaptation and resistance in the presence of several metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, V and Zn). In addition, the species proved to be a good phytoextractor for Sr and good phytostabilizers of Cu, Mn and Zn.
