Coleções especiais e valor de memória: reflexões no contexto de bibliotecas universitárias

Abstract

The study addresses the University Library as guardian of the university bibliographic heritage, of the memory of the University that brought it together and the discipline or disciplines it engages. Analyzes the Paulo Geyer Library as guardian of heritage and memory of Escola de Química - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro – EQ/UFRJ and, by extension, as guardian of the Memory of research and teaching of Chemistry in Brazil. Addresses libraries as places of memory. Presents the concepts of collection and special collection in the context of libraries. Stresses the importance of the formation of special collections for the preservation of bibliographic collections. Emphasizes the relevance of Paulo Geyer Library, in the context of EQ/UFRJ. Proposes criteria applicable to the formation of special collections in university libraries, from the experience of Paulo Geyer Library. Highlights the value of memory as a criterion for the selection of works to be included in the special collections.
