Resumo
This work is aimed at making a new concept of the of the Brazilian academic painting of the XIX century, showing that it was not only exclusively neoclassic, as it is generally accepted, but also underwent the influences of the Romantism, mainly of the French academic romantism, mostly known as Pompiérisme. For study we have chosen the most caracteristic Brazilian academic painter – Pedro Américo de Figueiredo e Melo – who studied in Paris with important names of the pompier painting and, in spite of having assimilated this artistic trend, is known, almost unanimously, as an academic neoclassic painter. Form the context of the Academicism, the Neoclassicism, the Romantism and the Pompiérisme, as well as the analysis of the thematic aspects, formal and technical, mainly the last one, it will be identified the influences that have really affected Pedro Américo and, by extencion, the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes, in Rio de Janeiro, where he initiadet his artistic education.
